🏆⚽ INDEPENDENCE DAY FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT: CELEBRATING UNITY AND NURTURING TALENT

On 24th October 2026 at Wipers Ground, Luangwa District

As part of Zambia’s 62nd Independence Anniversary celebrations under the theme “Zambia at 62: Our Journey, Our Growth, Our Future,” the Independence Football Tournament brought communities together through sport, promoting unity, teamwork and sportsmanship.

🥇 WINNERS: LUANGWA ZONE B 🏆
Prize: One trophy, a set of jerseys and one football.

🥈 RUNNERS-UP: LUANGWA ZONE C
Prize: a set of jerseys and one football.

During the award ceremony, District Commissioner, Mr. Luke Chikani, encouraged players from both teams to take football seriously, noting that their talent could open doors to higher levels of competition and greater opportunities. He urged them to remain disciplined, avoid drug abuse and stay focused on developing their skills.

Mr. Chikani further announced that plans were underway for the establishment of a recreation centre in Luangwa District, which would include a stadium where players could showcase their talent and spectators enjoy sporting events comfortably from designated seats.

Meanwhile, Council Chairperson, Ms. Loveness Banda, encouraged the young footballers to seize opportunities in sports, emphasising that football should not be viewed merely as a recreational activity but as a potential pathway to success and improved livelihoods.

She urged the players to put in more effort, remain committed and make the most of opportunities to advance their sporting careers.

👏 Congratulations to Luangwa Zone B and Luangwa Zone C for showcasing their talent and sportsmanship!

The message to our young people is clear: Stay focused, nurture your talent and seize every opportunity to rise to greater heights! 🇿🇲⚽

LUANGWA DISTRICT COMMEMORATES ZAMBIA’S 62ND INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY

Luangwa District joined the rest of the nation in commemorating Zambia’s 62nd Independence Anniversary under the theme “Zambia at 62: Our Journey, Our Growth, Our Future,” with district leaders calling for unity, increased productivity and collective efforts towards economic transformation.

The celebrations were officiated by Luangwa District Commissioner, Mr. Luke Chikani, who paid tribute to the freedom fighters and all citizens who contributed to Zambia’s independence, peace and stability.

He emphasised that political freedom must be complemented by economic independence and improved living standards.

Mr. Chikani highlighted the impact of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in decentralising development and bringing resources closer to communities.

He further urged residents to embrace the Growth Zambia Agenda, championed by Republican President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, through hard work, innovation, entrepreneurship and responsible management of natural resources.

Meanwhile, Luangwa Constituency Member of Parliament, Mr. Emmanuel Tembo, said the theme reflected the district’s resilience and its potential to contribute meaningfully to national development.

He identified tourism, trade, agriculture and sustainable resource management as key areas for economic growth. He also called for improved social services, job creation, women and youth empowerment, effective management of human-wildlife conflict, and continued efforts towards the opening of the proposed Chakwengwa Mine.

Luangwa Town Council Secretary, Mr. Greyson Sakala, highlighted the historical significance of Kavalamaja and Kakaro, describing them as reminders of the sacrifices made in the struggle for freedom. He urged residents to honour this legacy by actively participating in the district’s development.

Mr. Sakala further pointed to CDF-supported empowerment programmes, new markets, classroom blocks, youth facilities and the SCRALA project, which is supporting water-powered boreholes and drip irrigation systems to promote year-round farming and climate resilience.

He encouraged residents to seize opportunities in agriculture and tourism, particularly those presented by the confluence of the Luangwa and Zambezi rivers and the Lower Zambezi National Park, to improve livelihoods and contribute to the country’s economic targets.

The celebrations reaffirmed the importance of unity, patriotism and collaboration among government institutions, traditional leaders, the private sector and communities in building a resilient, inclusive and prosperous Luangwa District.
