Recently NBEEC had the pleasure, along with Brisbane City Council Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre and Queensland Wader Study Group, of hosting friends from Yatsu-higata Nature Observation Center and The Friends of the Y & B Wetlands Exchange Society to the 28th Narashino Brisbane Wetlands Exchange.

Over the four days friendships were enriched and knowledge strengthened as we shared global strategies to monitor and protect migratory shorebirds. This exchange continues to gather strength each year as we come together with our shared responsibility to protect migratory shorebirds that travel thousands of kilometres each year along the East Asian Australasian Flyway.

On Friday students from Earnshaw College participated in our Sensational Shorebirds program giving our Japanese visitors a look at how students learn at a very young age about migratory shorebirds and their global significance and the importance of caring for their wetland habitats. Two of the delegates, Fumi and Ray, presented the students with the gift of a paper crane. The students were delighted when they were shown how to make their crane move.

Over the weekend we shared many migratory shorebird experiences together strengthening our friendships from birding walks at many different locations, wildlife displays, nature journaling, delicious meals, visiting city hall and listening to researchers at the University of Queensland.

🌿 Interested in a career in conservation?
Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre is seeking Expressions of Interest for our 2027 Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management! 🌱
This is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop practical skills in conservation, land management and environmental sustainability while working towards a nationally recognised qualification.
Who can apply?
🎓 Year 11 students, with Year 10 students also considered
🌏 Students from multiple schools with an interest in conservation and the environment
🤝 Students willing to commit to weekly sessions and an overnight camp
What does the program look like?
📅 One day per week on Wednesdays across Terms 1–3, commencing Week 3 of Term 1
🏕️ Includes a two-day overnight camp
🌿 Hands-on learning and practical conservation experiences
📣 Expressions of Interest close 11 November 2026!
We are looking to recruit a cohort of 10–12 students, and early expressions of interest are encouraged. The program is subject to confirmation of student numbers.

We loved working with you EcoMarines Foundation. ❤️ They certainly were two very successful ‘Making Waves’ celebration days.
So inspiring to listen to the student presentations on both days. 👏👌
We were very impressed at the range of environmental actions that each of the EcoMarine Ambassadors have implemented into their schools this year.

We are absolutely delighted with our newly installed aquascape ecosystem pond installed by Pond Works

Thank you Mark and Andrea Jones and employees, Shaun and Shannon who meticulously created exactly the new outdoor learning area we had envisioned for our Centre. We couldn’t be happier with the finished product. Mark listened and delivered everything we asked for, working with us to ensure all plants were native and the space was accessible for all. 👍

We are very grateful for funding received through the 2026 sustainability appropriation grant provided by the Queensland Department of Education. These funds, along with our Centre contribution, made it possible to develop this beautiful and engaging new learning area.

Thank you to Graham from Fencebuild for installing pool fencing around the perimeter of the area ensuring our students can enjoy interacting in the pond under supervision.

Thank you in advance to Matt from No More Toads Australia for installing a toad mesh barrier to keep the invasive toad out of our pond.

We are so looking forward to sharing this new learning space with our visiting nature students and adults. I’m sure they are going to be absolutely mesmerised as they slow down and connect with nature in this new interactive outdoor learning space.
