Join us for a special LJLA event exploring the extraordinary life and work of sculptor, designer and artist Erwin Fabian (1915–2020), whose journey from Berlin to Melbourne reflects the resilience, creativity and cultural contribution of Jewish refugees in the twentieth century.
Acclaimed artist Eleanor Hart and historian Dr Seumas Spark will discuss Fabian’s remarkable story — from fleeing N**i Germany and surviving internment aboard the Dunera, to becoming a significant figure in Australia’s artistic and cultural life.
Eleanor Hart will also reflect on her own family’s migration from Vienna to Melbourne before the Second World War, growing up in Melbourne’s post-war Jewish community, and her long friendship with Erwin Fabian.
Together, Hart and Spark will explore themes of memory, migration, displacement, identity and the revival of European Jewish cultural life in post-war Melbourne.
Eleanor Hart is one of Australia’s most respected artists, known for her expressive work across painting, drawing and printmaking. Dr Seumas Spark is an adjunct fellow in history at Monash University and co-author of several acclaimed works including Dunera Lives: A Visual History.
We look forward to welcoming you to this thoughtful and inspiring conversation.

What if one of the most controversial “forgeries” in history was actually real?
In 1883, antiquities dealer Moses Shapira unveiled mysterious fragments of Deuteronomy—only for them to be dismissed as fake, destroying his reputation. Yet today, new research is reopening the case.
Join leading scholar Idan Dershowitz for a compelling lecture exploring whether these long-lost manuscripts could be authentic—and even represent an earlier version of the Bible itself. This debate continues to divide scholars, especially since the original fragments have been missing for over a century.
Discover the story, the controversy, and what it could mean for our understanding of biblical history and the ancient Near East.
