The Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) begins in the Mid-Western Regional Council area/ NSW RFS Cudgegong District on Thursday the 1st of October 2026.
If you haven't already, now is the time you should review your plans, prepare your property and have the important conversations with your family about what you will do on days of increased fire danger or if a fire should threaten your home!
During the BFDP, landowners and managers must obtain a Fire Permit from their local RFS brigade before lighting any fires, plus you must also notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn at least 24 hours in advance. To obtain a Fire Permit you can contact your local brigade Permit Officer or the Cudgegong Fire Control Centre Monday- Friday on 02 6370 9800 or complete an online application
Fire is an important tool for managing fire risk and supporting farming operations, but it is crucial that conditions allow for safe burning and the necessary precautions are in place. Escaped burns can have devastating outcomes and can result in heavy penalties.
If a fire does escape, make sure you call Triple Zero (000) immediately so that emergency services can respond quickly and minimise the damage.

👩‍🚒🔥🚒 Get Ready Weekend IS HERE | 19 & 20 September 2026 🚒🔥👨‍🚒

❓Do you understand the bush fire risk in your area?

🔥 GET READY FOR FIRE SEASON 🔥

Does your firefighting equipment actually work?

If it hasn’t been used since last season, now is the time to check it.

💧 Test pumps and hoses
🔋 Check batteries and generators
⛽ Check fuel supplies
🧯 Check fire extinguishers
🚜 Check machinery and equipment
🚒 Make sure access is clear

Start it. Test it. Make sure it works. ✅✅✅

And if you find something that doesn’t — you’ve still got time to fix it! 👌

🔥 GET READY FOR THE FIRE SEASON 🔥

Have you made your Bush Fire Survival Plan?

If a fire threatens your property, you may not have much time to make decisions.

Talk with your household now about:

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Who will do what?
🚗 Where will you go?
🛣️ Which roads will you take?
🐶 What about pets and livestock?
📱 Is your Hazards Near Me App set up with watch zones?

Don’t leave the important decisions until a fire is approaching. These are only some of the important questions to answer before the fire season.

Take a few minutes today to make your plan. Need help? Get along to one of the events happening locally this weekend for Get Ready Weekend.

🔥 GET READY FOR THE FIRE SEASON 🔥

A little preparation now can make a big difference.

This week, make a start on the jobs around your property:

🍂 Clean leaves and debris from around your home
🌿 Cut back vegetation overhanging buildings
🌾 Keep grass short where practical
🪵 Move flammable materials away from buildings
🚒 Clear and check access for emergency vehicles

If undertaking slashing and maintenance work, please ensure it is done when conditions are right to ensure you do not start a fire in the process! Getting in early while the grass is still green is ideal!

Don’t wait until the smoke is on the horizon. Get started now.

🔥 GET READY FOR THE FIRE SEASON 🔥

Do you know your bush fire risk?

Take a walk around your property and have a look at it from a firefighter’s perspective.

🌳 What vegetation surrounds your home?
🌾 Where are the areas of long grass or heavy fuel?
🚒 Could a fire truck easily access your property?
🏡 What areas around your home need attention?

Knowing your risk is the first step to getting ready. Not sure your risk and want to chat further to someone? Check out our previous post tagging the Brigades who are hosting events for Get Ready Weekend, this weekend!

Over the next few days, we’ll share some simple jobs you can tackle to get ready for the fire season.

We wish the members of the NSW RFS - Mudgee Headquarters Brigade all the best as they head off to the NSW RFS State Championships!
The State Champs are a whole lot of fun! Enjoy your weekend! 🚒 🔥
If you’re in and the NSW RFS Orana Team area over the weekend- go and check it out!!

🔥 Mudgee HQ Fire Foxes are off to State Champs! 🦊

Tomorrow, the Mudgee HQ Firefoxes are heading to the NSW RFS State Championships at Dubbo Showground from 11–13 September.

This year’s team is Nick, Hollie, Ethan, Thomas and Noah, bringing together a mix of familiar faces from our junior program.

For the past few years, Nick, Hollie and Ethan have spent plenty of time on the sidelines training and supporting our juniors. Thomas and Noah, meanwhile, were part of our junior team that took home 2nd place at last year’s Cadet Championships. Now the tables have turned and for the first time, all five get to compete together in the senior competition!

Nick, who is also Captain of NSW RFS - Mullamuddy Brigade will take on the Crew Leader role for the team.

Being our first time going to State Champs, we know its going to be a challenge however, we’re looking forward to having a crack, meeting other teams from across NSW and seeing how we handle whatever challenges are thrown our way.

Preparing for Champs has already been a great opportunity to train together, sharpen our teamwork, communication and problem solving, and practise skills through some very different scenarios.

Now we just have to see how the Fire Foxes go! 🦊🔥

Wish us luck!

If someone says "I'm fine" but you have a feeling they’re not, it might be because they’re not ready to talk, they feel uncomfortable, or they genuinely believe they’re coping.

Noticing changes and checking in with someone isn’t about pushing for details, it’s about showing you care. If they don’t open up, remind them that you're there. Sometimes people need time or the right moment before they share. Your steady presence matters more than you realise.
