Consulate General of Malta in Melbourne

Last Saturday on Anzac Day, the Consul General had the honour of joining members of the Maltese Ex Servicemen Association of Victoria for the Anzac Day March to the Shrine of Remembrance. Earlier, prayers were held by Father Lonnie Borg MSSP at the Maltese Community Council of Victoria. Our participation is very significant as it also commemorates the role that Malta played during the two world wars including its labour corps which worked side by side with the Anzacs in Gallipoli, its role as the Nurse of the Mediterranean when it welcomed thousands of wounded Anzacs and the Maltese Anzacs, 7 of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice during WW1. The Consul General would like to thank the Honorary Vice Consul for the Latrobe Valley Mr Mario Sammut for his exceptional service to the Maltese community as he retires from this official role after 37 years.

Mario will continue to contribute in the promotion of Maltese culture in Australia through his work as President of the Maltese Community Centre,
as well as in his role as curator of the Maltese Museum in Morwell.

The Consul General and staff at the Consulate would also like to thank Mario for his continued cooperation with our Office throughout the years and wish him, his wife Vivien and his family all the best for the coming years.

Il-Ħadd, 12 ta’ April, il-Konslu Ġenerali kellha l-unur li tattendi l-kommemorazzjoni tal-84 anniversarju mill-għoti tal-George Cross lill-poplu Malti għall-qlubija tiegħu matul it-Tieni Gwerra Dinjija, fix-Shrine of Remembrance. L-avveniment jiġi organizzat kull sena mill-Maltese Australian Association immexxija mis-Sur Ben Soler. Kienu preżenti, fost l-oħrajn, is-Sinjura Jo Briskey, Membru Federali tal-Parlament , is-Sur Michael Galea, Membru tal-Parlament ta’ Victoria, rappreżentanti mill-Armata, in-Navy u l-Forza tal-Ajru Awstraljani, il-Konslu Ġenerali tar-Renju Unit u tal-Filippini, il-President tal-Ordni ta’ Malta fl-Awstralja, is-Sur John Murphy, u l-President tal-Maltese Community Council of Victoria, is-Sinjura Antonia Camilleri.

On Sunday 12 of April, the Consul General had the honour to attend the commemoration of the 84th anniversary of the award of the George Cross to the Maltese people for their bravery during the Second World War, at the Shrine of Remembrance. The event is organized annually by the Maltese Australian Association led by Mr Ben Soler. The commemoration was attended, amongst others, by Ms Jo Briskey, Federal MP, Mr Michael Galea, Victorian Parliament MP, representatives from the Australian Army, Navy and Air Force, the Consul General of the United Kingdom and the Philippines, the President of the Order of Malta in Australia, Mr John Murphy and the President of the Maltese Community Council of Victoria, Ms Antonia Camilleri.

For the next three months, the Consulate General will be showcasing five paintings by Maltese-Australian artist Lewis Spiteri. Lewis is a self taught artist and the artwork being exhibited offers various Maltese insights, based on one of his visits to Malta.
