Queensland's Energy Plan Leaves Data Centre Demand Out of the Equation

Queensland's energy plan assumes zero electricity demand from data centres, despite growing investment in AI infrastructure.
The Australian Financial Review reports a potential 3 GW gap in electricity demand planning, raising concerns about whether future generation and network capacity can keep pace.

If demand grows faster than supply, Queensland businesses could face greater wholesale price volatility and higher electricity contract costs.

Renewables | November 5, 2026: Certificate prices soften as REGO uncertainty continues

LGCs last traded at $7.35, while limited REGO trading leaves pricing beyond 2030 uncertain.

Why it matters: Businesses seeking long-term renewable electricity contracts face uncertainty over certificate costs from 2031.

Gas | November 4, 2026: Forward contracts below spot prices

East Coast spot gas trades at $11.50–$12.50/GJ, while 2027–2029 commodity-only contract offers have emerged around $9.50/GJ.

Why it matters: Businesses with upcoming gas contract expiries have an opportunity to assess pricing below current spot levels.

Energy Market Update | 4 November 2026: Near-Term Opportunities, Longer-Term Supply Risks

Electricity prices remain elevated despite mild weather and softer demand. While existing coal generation, rooftop solar and batteries continue to support supply, the approaching retirements of Yallourn in 2028 and Eraring in 2029 raise questions about replacement capacity and future price pressures.

Gas presents a different challenge. East Coast spot prices remain at $11.50–$12.50/GJ, with some 2027–2029 contract offers below $10/GJ. However, declining southern gas production could tighten supply from winter 2029, with broader supply gaps forecast from 2030.

Renewable certificates have also softened, with LGCs last trading at $7.35.

For businesses, today’s market conditions may offer opportunities, but longer-term supply risks make contract timing increasingly important.

Electricity | November 3, 2026: Prices hold despite mild weather

Electricity prices remain elevated, driven by low wind generation, constrained interconnectors and generator bidding rather than extreme weather. Victoria reached $170/MWh, while NSW Calendar 2027 futures gained nearly $1/MWh.

Why it matters: Businesses remain exposed to higher contract prices even without a heatwave.

At PASA Premier Confex, we spoke with procurement and business leaders about the issues shaping energy decisions across Australian organisations.

Contract timing, market risk, energy management and carbon reporting were recurring themes in many of those conversations.

Lower electricity prices today, higher prices tomorrow?

Lower wholesale electricity prices are making it harder for renewable energy projects to secure funding.
Delays in new generation could tighten electricity supply as coal plants retire, putting upward pressure on future electricity spot and contract prices.

Energy Market Update | October 29, 2026: Renewable certificates approach $7

LGC prices are approaching $7, creating a potential buying opportunity.

Certificate prices have softened from levels nearer $8, reducing the cost of renewable energy commitments.

With the REGO scheme starting in 2031 and future pricing still uncertain, businesses have a clearer view of current LGC costs than post-2030 certificate prices.

Lower electricity prices today do not remove future price risk.

Australia's wholesale electricity prices fell 27% to $63/MWh in Q3 2026, according to AEMO.
Yet coal retirements and rising electricity demand continue to influence future contract prices.

For businesses, progressive procurement helps spread purchasing decisions across different periods, reducing exposure to market timing risk.

Energy Market Update | October 28, 2026: Electricity futures retreat

Electricity prices are easing, but summer risk remains.

Mild weather is reducing demand, pushing futures lower across most NEM regions except South Australia.

But higher daytime spot averages have already driven up summer contract prices. Any return of volatility could reverse recent falls.
For businesses, the question is whether to secure current pricing or retain flexibility.
