đBABY SNAKE SEASON HAS STARTEDđ
Are you prepared?
Towards the end of January through to April/May comes the time of the year where new life begins and all our beautiful snakes start to emerge from their egg and take their first breath of Australian air.
Despite coming out of the egg with venom glands and fangs, theyâre not out to just chase us down and bite us, in fact theyâre just wanting to get away, find shelter and wait for a garden skink to run past so they can get their first meal.
Dugites can have upwards of 30 eggs which sounds insane right? However 1/4 of them may go mouldy, 1/4 of them might not make it out of the egg or just not be a fertile egg, 1/4 get eaten by cats/birds and other wildlife (native or invasive) within their first few weeks exploring this new big world and that final quarter may make it to adulthood (4-6+ years old).
How to prepare:
1. Look for small gaps in doors or fly wire that may have the potential to let something in, this happens most commonly on the hotter days where snakes will sneak inside the house due to the fact we have our aircon on.
2. Do you have gaps under fences in the backyard where wildlife can get under? Expandable foam (Space invader) is your best friend for the cheapest option, clog it up and use a razor to cut the excess off for a nice smooth finish.
3. Keep a snake catchers number handy and at the ready (ours will be at the bottom of the post for anyone who would like it).
4. If the snake in your house or on a solid flat smooth surface and is under 30cm (a foot) throw a large cold wet towel on it (beach towel works perfectly) which will help keep the snake in place.
5. Make sure you keep pets and kids away from the snake. If the snake is outside bring kids and pets inside, if the snake is in the house try and seclude it to one room and put a wet towel at the door in the spot under the door (from the side youâre standing on to shut the door - apply towel once door is shut). If the snake isnât secluded, I would suggest kids and pets outside and adult keeping an eye on where the snake is going in the house from a safe distance.)
6. Remember to try and keep all doors closed leading into the house as this will help minimise the chance of them entering in.

Snake or lizard?
This is a beautiful adult Two Toed Earless Skink (Hemiergis quadrilineata). We relocated this one tonight from a front yard in Huntingdale after the home owners called up thinking it was a baby snake. Donât stress if you have one of these and think itâs a snake, they most commonly get called snakes because the arm/legs and toes are generally too small to notice or see when youâre not close enough to them.
A small burrowing species of lizard that is found in nearly every backyard. These are also commonly called mulch skinks as well.
If youâre in need of a reptile relocator donât hesitate to get in contact with us.

â ď¸â ď¸Caution viewer discretion deceased snake in photos after the flora photos.â ď¸â ď¸
Attended Atlas in Jarrahdale today for a Dugite that was laying in the car park of the fuel station.
At first glance the snake was deceased, however after further examination at the petrol station I realised he hadnât passed yet however was on his last legs. By the time I had gotten somewhere to check if the snake was still alive before taking it to UPV for euthanasia, the snake had passed away.
The snake has been laid to rest in open bushland for nature to take its course.
Suspected death by motor vehicle. Please stay vigilant while driving and be cautious of our misunderstood animals crossing the road.

A nice and healthy Dugite (Pseudonaja affinis) relocated from a property in West Pinjarra.
Had a lovely couple call me up about a snake that had gone into a large sand pile behind their house. I headed down and after being told where the snake had headed in, I started shovelling around. Within 5 minutes I had located the snake. Once the snake was out and being safely handled it was time for pictures to be taken before it was placed into the tube. We stood around for about half an hour talking about snakes and why we need them around.
