👨‍🍳 A DIFFERENT KIND OF KITCHEN!

We're looking for a casual chef to join the team at Somers School Camp!

This isn't your typical hospitality gig. You'll be preparing meals for visiting school groups in a unique coastal setting, helping fuel the adventures and experiences that make Somers so special.

✅ Casual work, primarily Wednesday to Friday (fortnightly)
✅ A unique coastal workplace
✅ A great team and a rewarding environment

One of the best parts of Somers is watching kids surprise themselves.

Trying something new can feel a little daunting at first - but sometimes all it takes is giving it a go to discover a new skill, a new confidence, or something you absolutely love.

Well done Mich!!!

For Michelle “Mich” Allen, our next practitioner finalist, connecting people with Country begins with noticing the small things.

Mich brings more than 25 years of Outdoor Education teaching experience, including extensive experience at Somers School Camp in Victoria and, since 2016, at Birrigai Outdoor School in the ACT, where she became a School Leader in 2019.

Of note, she has helped lead the development of Birrigai’s award-winning Early Childhood Outdoor Learning Programs and was instrumental in co-developing its First Nations Truth Telling Program with local Ngunnawal people. Together, these programs have reached thousands of children, students and educators, with their impact extending into teaching practice well beyond Birrigai.

A generous mentor, Mich also shares her knowledge through professional development, conference workshops and resources for fellow educators. Her colleagues describe a leader who encourages others to move beyond their comfort zones while supporting and celebrating their growth.

• A DET Victoria outdoor residential school on the Mornington Peninsula
• We host 160 Grade 5/6 students per 9-day program
• Focus areas: Environmental Science + Personal & Social Capability development
• Inclusive, culturally sensitive, and proudly part of the public education system

👩‍🏫 About You
• VIT-registered teacher
• Currently employed at a Victorian government school
• Passionate about student engagement and wellbeing
• No special qualifications required!

📚 What You'll Do
• Support and supervise a group of ~20 students
• Team-teach with our experienced staff
• Deliver approx. 7 hours of scheduled lessons over 9 days (PD provided)
• Participate in PD—earn 50 hours toward your VIT renewal
• Enjoy time off throughout the program to relax, explore, or connect with others
• Join activities like Flying Fox, Abseiling, High Ropes if you’d like!

❌ What You Won’t Do
• Cook or serve meals
• Supervise mealtimes
• Administer medication (we have an on-site nurse)
• Plan/prep lessons—we take care of that!
• Stay on site during downtime (unless you want to)

🛌 Accommodation & Facilities
• Stay in a private heated/cooled room with ensuite
• Shared hut with students (own sleeping area + common space)
• Access to a teachers’ lounge, pool table, games room, surfboards, bikes, and more
• Use local cafés, explore the beach, or unwind during your break times

💰 Remuneration
• Your school continues paying your salary
• Plus, receive $2,000 (cash or to support time-in-lieu)
• We fund CRT payment for your school to help release you

Flashback Friday 🎞️

A fascinating look back at a very different chapter in the history of Somers School Camp.

After serving as an RAAF training base during World War II, the site was transformed into a holiday resort known as “Feature Holidays - Somers By The Sea.”

The resort operated for only a couple of seasons before the site became a migrant holding centre in 1949, and eventually Somers School Camp, with the first camp held in 1959.

It’s pretty amazing to see the same place we know today being used in such a completely different way.
