The Bayside Council presented a commemorative award to the Consul General of 🇬🇷 Greece in Sydney Mr George Skemperis, during its meeting yesterday evening.

The honour marked the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney and recognised a century of service to the Greek-Australian community.

The ceremony took place at Rockdale Town Hall 🏛️, where Mayor Edward McDougall formally bestowed the award on behalf of the Council. In his remarks, he highlighted the Consulate’s enduring role as a vital bridge between Greece 🇬🇷 and Australia 🇦🇺.

✨To mark the occasion, Rockdale Town Hall was illuminated in the blue and white colours of the Greek flag, while the Greek national flag 🇬🇷 flew proudly outside the Council chamber, underscoring the significance of the milestone.

The ceremony commenced with a prayer offered by His Grace Bishop Christodoulos of Magnesia and Father Sokrates Dokos of the Greek Orthodox Parish and Community of Kogarah.

Accepting the award, Mr Skemperis noted that Greeks had been living in Australia before the Consulate was established. He expressed his gratitude to Australia for its hospitality, praised the hard work and achievements of the Greek-Australian community, and thanked the Council for the recognition.

As part of the centenary celebrations, Greek-Australian Councillors Fiona Douskou and Councillor Vicki Poulos addressed the gathering, reflecting on the longstanding presence and valuable contribution of the Greek community in the Bayside area.

Το Δημοτικό Συμβούλιο του Bayside απένειμε τιμητικό βραβείο στον Γενικό Πρόξενο της Ελλάδας στο Σίδνεϊ 🇬🇷, κ. Γιώργο Σκέμπερη, κατά τη διάρκεια χθεσινής συνεδρίασής του. Η διάκριση απονεμήθηκε με αφορμή τη συμπλήρωση 100 χρόνων από την ίδρυση του Ελληνικού Προξενείου στο Σίδνεϊ και την εκατονταετή προσφορά του προς την ελληνοαυστραλιανή κοινότητα.

Η τελετή πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Rockdale Town Hall 🏛️. Ο δήμαρχος Edward McDougall επέδωσε την τιμητική διάκριση εκ μέρους του Δημοτικού Συμβουλίου υπογραμμίζοντας τον καθοριστικό ρόλο του Προξενείου ως σταθερού συνδετικού κρίκου μεταξύ Ελλάδας 🇬🇷 και Αυστραλίας 🇦🇺.

✨Για την περίσταση, το Δημαρχείο φωταγωγήθηκε με τα χρώματα της ελληνικής σημαίας, ενώ η γαλανόλευκη 🇬🇷 κυμάτιζε έξω από την αίθουσα του Συμβουλίου, υπογραμμίζοντας τη σημασία της επετείου.

Η εκδήλωση άνοιξε με προσευχή από τον Θεοφιλέστατο Επίσκοπο Μαγνησίας κ. Χριστόδουλο και τον π. Σωκράτη Ντόκο της Ενορίας του Kogarah.

Αποδεχόμενος τη διάκριση, ο Γενικός Πρόξενος της Ελλάδας, κ. Σκέμπερης επισήμανε ότι Έλληνες ζούσαν στην Αυστραλία πριν από την ίδρυση του Προξενείου. Ευχαρίστησε την Αυστραλία για τη φιλοξενία της, εξήρε την εργατικότητα και τα επιτεύγματα της ελληνικής παροικίας και εξέφρασε τις ευχαριστίες του προς το Δημοτικό Συμβούλιο για την τιμή που του απέδωσε.

Με αφορμή την επέτειο, χαιρετισμό απηύθυναν οι Eλληνοαυστραλές Δημοτικές Σύμβουλοι Fiona Douskou και Vicki Poulos, οι οποίες αναφέρθηκαν στη μακρόχρονη παρουσία και συμβολή του ελληνισμού στην περιοχή.

✨ Με ιδιαίτερη επιτυχία ολοκληρώθηκαν την Κυριακή 7 Ιουνίου 2026 οι επετειακές εκδηλώσεις για τη συμπλήρωση 💯 χρόνων από την ίδρυση του Γενικού Προξενείου της 🇬🇷 Ελλάδας στο Σύδνεϋ.

Την Παρασκευή 5 Ιουνίου, σε μια κατάμεστη αίθουσα στο Darling Harbour Theatre θεατές όλων των ηλικιών διασκέδασαν με τη μοναδική stand up comedy “Battle of the Greeks”, στην οποία συμμετείχαν οι κωμικοί από την Ελλάδα, Κατερίνα Βρανά, NefeliMeg, Γιάννης Σαρακατσάνης και οι Ελληνοαυστραλοί κωμικοί, Anthony Locascio, Charisa Bossinakis, George Moulos. Παρουσιαστές της εκδήλωσης ήταν οι Mariela Mantzoros, Πρόεδρος του Macquarie University Greek Association και ο Evan Koutzoumis, Πρόεδρος του UTS Hellenic Society.

Το Σάββατο 6 Ιουνίου η Διευθύντρια Ερευνών της diaNEOsis, Δρ Φαίη Μακαντάση πραγματοποίησε διάλεξη για τη σύγχρονη οικονομική και κοινωνική πραγματικότητα της Ελλάδας, ενώ ακολούθησε συζήτηση με το κοινό με συντονιστή τον Διευθυντή του Business Sydney, Paul Nicolaou.

Την Κυριακή 7 Ιουνίου η ηθοποιός Αλεξάνδρα Ούστα συγκίνησε το κοινό με την θεατρική παράσταση Λεμονιά, βασισμένη σε αληθινές κασέτες της μετανάστριας μητέρας της τη δεκαετία του ‘70. Την εκδήλωση τίμησε με την παρουσία της η Υπουργός Sophie Cotsis.

✨ With great success and an exceptionally high level of attendance, the centenary celebrations marking 💯 years since the establishment of the Consulate General of 🇬🇷 Greece in Sydney concluded on Sunday, 7 June 2026.

On Friday, 5 June, at a packed Darling Harbour Theatre, audiences of all ages enjoyed the unique stand-up comedy event “Battle of the Greeks”, featuring comedians from Greece — Katerina Vrana, NefeliMeg, and Yiannis Sarakatsanis — alongside Greek-Australian comedians Anthony Locascio, Charisa Bossinakis, and George Moulos. The event was hosted by Mariela Mantzoros, President of the Macquarie University Greek Association, and Evan Koutzoumis, President of the UTS Hellenic Society.

On Saturday, 6 June, Dr Fay Makantasi, Research Director at diaNEOsis, delivered a lecture on Greece’s contemporary economic and social reality, followed by a discussion with the audience moderated by Paul Nicolaou, Executive Director of Business Sydney.

On Sunday, 7 June, actress Alexandra Ousta moved the audience with the theatrical performance “Lemonia”, based on real cassette recordings of her migrant mother in the 1970s. The event was honoured by the attendance of the Hon. Sophie Cotsis, Minister for Industrial Relations and Minister for Work Health and Safety.

📌 Symposium on the Role of Greece in EU Science Diplomacy
