SYDNEY AUDIENCES ENTHRALLED BY MORO MORO THE MUSICAL


SYDNEY, 24 October 2026 - A distinguished audience led by Philippine Ambassador to Australia Antonio A. Morales and Consul General Greg Marie C. Mariño, along with members of the Consular Corps of New South Wales (NSW), government officials, and the Filipino community in NSW, gathered at the Darling Quarter Theatre to attend the historic opening night of Moro Moro the Musical—the first production of its kind to be staged in Australia.

The attendees reveled in a vibrant display of artistic talent, dynamic choreography, and colorful creativity that reinterpreted a historical Philippine theatrical form for modern audiences.

Originating during the Spanish colonial period in the 17th century, the traditional moro moro, derived from the Spanish word for Moor, historically depicted allegorical conflicts between Christians and Muslims. In this 21st-century production, creative duo Rolmar Baldonado and Glenice Lui breathed fresh life into the classic art form, turning it into a musical. Moving beyond historical religious narratives, Moro Moro the Musical focused on human relationships caught in a world filled with change, conflict, and crossed signals. Through original songs, the production delivered a deeply relevant message: that love, understanding, and peace can ultimately prevail over division.

Throughout the evening, the show was warmly received by the packed auditorium. Audiences reacted enthusiastically, laughing out loud, shedding tears during emotional beats, and enjoying each moment as if they were part of the performance themselves.

The premiere concluded with heartfelt applause, with some in the audience singing along to the anthemic Love Lights the Way, marking a milestone for Filipino-Australian performing arts and a memorable celebration of shared culture. END

FOR MORO MORO THE MUSICAL OPENING NIGHT


SYDNEY, 24 October 2026 - The Philippine Consulate General in Sydney hosted an exclusive pre-show reception to mark the opening night of Moro Moro the Musical, the first production of its kind staged in Australia.

The gathering served as a landmark celebration of the 80th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Australia. The reception brought together members of the Consular Corps of New South Wales, NSW officials, including Hon. Stephen Bali MP, as well as guests of the production team.

In her remarks, Consul General Greg Marie C. Mariño congratulated the talented cast and crew for their remarkable achievement and spoke about the musical’s roots in Philippine culture and how it was brought to life and transformed for modern audiences. In his keynote address, Ambassador Antonio A. Morales emphasized that the production comes at a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship. Celebrating eight decades of enduring friendship and Strategic Partnership, Ambassador Morales highlighted the strong and robust cooperation between the two nations across key sectors, including defense and security, trade, education, tourism, and vibrant people-to-people exchanges.

Underscoring the unique power of cultural expression to deepen these ties, Ambassador Morales commended all who took part in the play, “Bringing a production of this scale to life is no small feat. You have taken a traditional 17th-century Philippine theater form and lovingly reimagined it; infusing it with modern heart, a rich musical score, and a message of hope and peace.”

Guests enjoyed an innovative culinary experience provided by Takam, a Sydney-based Filipino restaurant redefining tradition through its "FilipinoFoodForward" philosophy. Dedicated to bringing traditional Philippine dishes into the mainstream Australian dining scene, Takam’s Chef Francis Dela Cruz and Chef Aileen Aguirre actively promote awareness of Filipino heritage through their food by thoughtfully incorporating native Australian ingredients into iconic Philippine recipes.

As part of its ongoing support for Philippine performance arts and community engagement, the Philippine Consulate General sponsored tickets for its guests to attend the reception and experience the premiere performance immediately following the event. END

PH CONSULATE GENERAL, FILCCA ALIGN EFFORTS TO ADVANCE FILIPINO-AUSTRALIAN REPRESENTATION

SYDNEY, 26 October 2026 - Consul General Greg Marie C. Mariño received the board members of the Filipino Communities Council of Australia Inc. (FILCCA), led by President Roxanne Sarthou, during a courtesy call at the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney.

As the umbrella organization for Filipino community groups across Australia, FILCCA serves as a unifying force working to promote and advance the welfare and interests of Filipino-Australians nationwide.

During the visit, the board highlighted FILCCA’s advocacy for stronger representation, inclusion, and collective progress within Australia's multicultural society. Discussions also centered on preparations for the 18th FILCCA National Conference, which will be hosted by the Filipino Community Council of Victoria, Inc. in Melbourne on 15–17 October 2027.

Consul General Mariño commended FILCCA’s national leadership and reaffirmed the Consulate General’s commitment to supporting initiatives that empower the diaspora.

PCG Sydney Joins 82nd Commemoration of the 82nd Leyte Gulf Landings

Sydney, 17 October 2026 — The Philippine Consulate General in Sydney joined the community in commemorating the 82nd anniversary of the Leyte Gulf Landings at All Saints Catholic Church in Liverpool, New South Wales on 17 October 2026.

Consul Marianne Bringas, representing the Philippine Consulate General, paid tribute to the sacrifices of Allied service members and underscored the deep and enduring partnership between the Philippines and Australia. She noted, “Eighty-two years later, we remember their sacrifice with profound gratitude. We honor their memory by preserving the peace they fought for and by strengthening the friendship they helped build.”

The commemoration was hosted by the Visayan Association of Australia, in coordination with the Philippine Community Council of New South Wales (PCC NSW) and Philippine Australian Global Alliance for Service and Advocacy (PAGASA), bringing together members of the community to honor the historic events that marked a decisive chapter in Philippine history. Also in attendance were Ms. Anne Stanley MP (Government Whip | Federal Member for Werriwa), Ms. Charishma Kaliyanda MP (Member of Legislative Assembly | State Member for Liverpool), Mr. Paul Lynch (former Member for Liverpool), Fr Paul Monkerud (Parish Priest of All Saints Catholic Church), and community leaders.

PH CONSULATE GENERAL IN SYDNEY BRINGS CONSULAR SERVICES CLOSER TO FILIPINOS IN BALLINA

10 October 2026, Ballina, NSW — The Philippine Consulate General in Sydney conducted a Consular Outreach Mission in Ballina on 10 October 2026, bringing essential consular services closer to Filipinos from the Northern Rivers region, Mid North Coast region, and Queensland.

Led by Consul General Greg Marie C. Mariño, the Consular Outreach Team processed applications for passports, civil registry services, dual citizenship, notarial services, and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearances. The Team also facilitated the registration of overseas voters ahead of the 2028 National Elections.

The Migrant Workers Office in Canberra joined the mission, providing assistance with employment contract verification and Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) applications.

The Consulate General last conducted a Consular Outreach Mission in Ballina in 2021, making this latest visit an important opportunity to renew its engagement with the Filipino community in the region. END
