The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) is observed each year on May 17. This day marks the anniversary of the World Health Organization’s 1990 decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders — a pivotal step toward greater recognition and dignity for LGBTQ+ people worldwide.

IDAHOBIT is a global call to raise awareness of the discrimination, violence, and marginalization that LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face.

It’s a time to reflect, stand in solidarity, and reaffirm our commitment to equality, inclusion, and respect for all.

At PCRS, we know that family isn’t one-size-fits-all — it can be biological, chosen, or built through community. However it’s defined, every family deserves care, respect, and the chance to flourish.

We’re honored to support youth, adults, and families each day through programs that nurture safe spaces, build stronger connections, and encourage resilience.

Red Dress Day, observed annually on May 5, honours and raises awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people in Canada.

Red Dress Day is a National Day of Awareness and Remembrance for the thousands of Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people who have been subject to disproportionate violence in Canada. The day was inspired by Métis artist Jaime Black and her REDress Project, which began in 2010. Black hung empty red dresses in public spaces to symbolize the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, creating a powerful visual representation of the crisis.

The day highlights the ongoing human rights crisis of gender-based and racialized violence against Indigenous communities. Indigenous women, who make up less than 5% of Canada’s population, account for 24% of female homicide victims, reflecting systemic inequities and the lasting impacts of colonization. Red Dress Day serves to honor the lives and legacies of MMIWG2S, support families and communities, and advocate for justice, healing, and systemic change.

This week, we pause to check in — with ourselves, with each other, and with our communities.
