Today marks the 20th anniversary of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – a day we recognize the importance of protecting the rights and well being of older persons.

Older persons help build our communities, shape our country, and serve as leaders, caregivers, mentors and role models.

The mistreatment of older persons, whether financial, physical, emotional, or through neglect, has no place in our communities.

In Canada, elder abuse is not only harmful, it is a crime. The Criminal Code includes provisions that can apply to abuse of older persons, such as assault, criminal harassment, theft, fraud, and failure to provide the necessaries of life.

By learning the signs of mistreatment of older persons and understanding the protections available, we can create communities where older persons feel safe and supported.
