Pilton Bluecoat Academy Welcome to Pilton Bluecoat Academy, a friendly and happy school situated on the edge of the North Devon town of Barnstaple.

Welcome to Pilton Bluecoat Academy, a friendly and happy school where we put an equal emphasis on high academic achievement alongside personal and social development. Our school is situated on the edge of the North Devon town of Barnstaple and provides education for children in Years 3,4,5 and 6. The school has an excellent reputation and provides a vibrant and harmonious community for its children and staff. Our children benefit from a wide range of curriculum activity and specialist teaching, with much of their learning taking place away from the classroom in a practical and active context. The school is part of the TEAM Multi Academy Trust along with its rural partners from Brayford and Umberleigh Academies.

Dear Parents and Carers,

First of all, a big thank you to everyone who attended our family meetings. It is such an important opportunity to meet your child’s new teacher properly and connect with them about your child’s journey into their new class and year group.

Please remember, though, that you don’t need to wait until the next family meeting to speak to us! Staff are available on the doors each day, and if there is something you would like to discuss, please reach out. We can make sure the right member of the team gets in touch. Thank you for your continued support.

A massive well done to our Year 5 children who visited Eden as part of their topic this term. I’m told it was a really enriching experience, and the children got so much out of seeing their learning brought to life.

Another well done to Year 5 for their swimming! By swimming weekly and consistently this year, nearly all the children have now completed their 25 metres. What a fantastic achievement!

Our attendance is currently just over 95%, which is great to see. Thank you for helping us keep this up. Being in school every day, and arriving on time, makes such a difference. It means children don’t miss important learning, can settle into the day with their friends and are ready to make the most of every opportunity.

Every day counts, and those first few minutes of the morning really do matter!

This term, we have been thinking about hope and how we can build positive moments through our actions. Small things can make a big difference, a kind word, including someone in a game, helping a friend or taking the time to listen.

We know that some children can find it difficult to understand and manage their feelings and emotions, particularly when things don’t go as they would like during play. We work closely with our children to help them understand these feelings, develop positive relationships and find ways to move forward when things feel tricky.

If you can continue these conversations at home, talking about our feelings, how we treat one another and how we can serve each other with kindness and care, that would be brilliant. We are all part of the same school family, and the way we treat one another really matters.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support. I hope you all enjoy a lovely half-term break, have some time to rest and recharge!

We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the next half term.

Kind regards,

Mathew Harts

Dear Parents and Carers,

There has been so much happening over the last seven days that I’m going to keep this week’s newsletter short and sweet!

I have to start by praising our Year 5 and 6 children who returned from Germany. They have been sharing their experiences, and what an incredible opportunity for children of their age! They were simply brilliant, building deep friendships with their German partners. Please take a look at our page to see two lovely videos celebrating our values, including one of our collective worship songs being sung to our children and staff by their German friends. These connections give everyone the opportunity to learn and grow together. We have further exciting global projects in the pipeline!

This week, our collective worship focused on leukaemia as we prepare to welcome back one of our children who has been battling this illness. We talked about how, as a school family, we celebrate together in the good times and look after one another through the difficult times. Your children are incredible, and I am so proud of them.

A busy week of opportunities!

Poetry Week: What a wonderful week celebrating poetry! The recitals on stage were lovely, and it was brilliant to see the children developing their skills, confidence and expression as they brought poems to life. I have to say, though, that my personal favourite remains Notes on the Art of Poetry by Dylan Thomas (a wonderful poet!). If you haven’t come across it, it is well worth a read!

Year 3 Multi-Skills: Our children visited Pilton Community College for a competition and were sensational!

The London trip: This week, the teachers and staff met with families to talk through the London trip. Another fantastic experience and opportunity for our children to visit our capital city.

Cross country: 32 children with the fastest times from our recent competition progressed to the Stevens Shield at Great Torrington. We’re awaiting the results and will share these shortly!

Year 5 and the Police: Our children enjoyed a session with a police officer from a new educational team, helping them understand how to access support from the emergency services. We have more sessions with them booked in, which is wonderful.

Water safety: A big thank you to Ollie from Tarka Leisure for speaking to our children about staying safe around water and the opportunities available at the pool. We look forward to developing our links with the team further.

SEND support: Richard Thorne from the Visual Impairment Team worked with our staff, sharing valuable knowledge and guidance to help us continue strengthening our support for children with SEND.

Next week, our family meetings provide a brilliant opportunity to connect with your child’s new class teacher, look at their books and discuss how they are settling in. If you have any worries or concerns, please do speak to your child’s teacher. Working together is so important, and we want every child to have the best possible opportunities to thrive.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our wonderful school.

Have a lovely weekend!

Kind regards,
