More support urged for ASN pupils as specialist teacher numbers drop 24/03/2026

As The Scottish Government figures show that the number of specialist additional support needs (ASN) teachers fell from 3,038 in 2015 to 2,864 in 2025, we are calling for both the government and local authorities to provide more resources to support those with ASN, the number of whom has almost doubled over the last decade.

We are also urging the political parties to make this a key plank of their election campaigns.

In 2015, each ASN teacher supported the equivalent of 50 pupils with ASN; by 2025, this figure had risen to 105. Risk of 'lost generation' without increased investment in additional support needs 19/03/2026

Risk of 'lost generation': we call for the extra funds arising from the UK government's spending increase on special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in English schools to be ringfenced by the Scottish Government to support those with additional support needs (ASN) in Scottish schools.

A recent Scottish government-commissioned report on ASN, undertaken by former chief inspector of education Janie McManus, found a “growing gap” between what ASN pupils are promised and what they receive.
