Step back in time & explore the home of Agnes Toward. Protected by the National Trust for Scotland Her mother also used the house as her business premises.

The house at 145 Buccleuch Street was built in 1892 by speculative builders keen to monopolise on Glasgow’s swift industrial boom. Agnes Toward and her mother, Mrs Agnes Reid Toward who was a dressmaker, moved here in 1911. Miss Toward grew up to become a shorthand typist for a firm of shipping merchants and coal exporters called Prentice, Service & Henderson. She never married and worked on into

Holiday essentials: Tenement House style 😎☀️

Summer is here so it's time to get prepped for those holidays. These items belonged to Miss Agnes Toward - suitcase included!

Her name remains written on the luggage tag all these years later. We know from items kept within our archive that Miss Toward was fond of a wee holiday - she had her favourite hotels too!

A letter contained within the house's archive suggests that she was something of a return guest to the Largs hotel!

Visiting Glasgow this summer? Come and see us at the Tenement House and learn more about Miss Toward's story

✨What I mind best, was the wee wally dug✨

A Tenement House icon if we do say so ourselves.

These wee companions were a bit of a interior decor craze once upon a time. Our duo of wally dugs sit upon the parlour fireplace, taking pride of place in this Glaswegian home.

Be sure to pick up a wally dug magnet or pin set from the Tenement House shop! 🛍️

☀️Glasgow; it's pure roasting out there☀️

Summer has arrived in the city, and we think we'll be taking after Miss Toward and her pals and partaking in a wee ice cream today!

Our order is an ice cream oyster if anyone is asking 🍦

What's your go-to ice cream?

The Tenement House, Glasgow
One woman's Home. A whole city's story.
We think that's pure dead brilliant 😉

✨Happy International Museum Day from The Tenement House✨

We're honoured to tell the story of Miss Agnes Toward and the extraordinary home she left behind.

Not only do we care for the objects in her home itself, we're fortunate to house a plethora of personal effects she collected throughout the years - including newspapers, clothes, jewellery, letters, postcards, photographs, recipes, books, bills, and more!

Word of the Day: 'shoogly'

1. Unsteady; liable to shake, sway or wobble
2. A term of endearment used by Glaswegians in reference to public transport systems - notably the Glasgow Subway and, previously, the trams
For example: 'those trains are pure shoogly'

This newspaper from The Tenement House archive features news on a refurbishment intended for the subway. Glasgow subway trains are famous for a certain degree of swaying upon the tracks whilst in motion!

Opening in 1896, Glasgow's underground system is the 3rd oldest in the world! It's circular design takes passengers across the city, travelling under the River Clyde; connecting South, West and Central Glasgow for 130 years.

And if you would like to experience Glasgow's infamous 'shoogly' trains for yourself, why not take the subway over to The Tenement House?

We're a 10-minute walk from either St. George's Cross or Cowcaddens station 🚆

Happy shoogling!
