Harry’s fundraising ‘drive’ for Ward L42 is huge success! 🏌️‍♂️

In November 2024, Harry was involved in a serious car accident when he was 14. He required life-saving surgery at Leeds Children’s Hospital and he spent eight weeks on Ward L42.

Harry celebrated his birthday, Christmas and new year in hospital and remembers how staff made each occasion really special with cards, gifts and activities to brighten up his long hospital stay.

When he continued his recovery at home, Harry decided he wanted to give something back and he settled on the idea of a charity golf day to raise funds to help the Ward L42 team improve the ward environment for patients and parents.

The Ward L42 Team is currently leading a fundraising project to update family kitchen spaces and add child-friendly wall art to the ward.

With support from his family Harry found sponsors, prizes for the raffle and coordinated 18 teams of four golfers to play on the day. Harry’s goal was to raise £1000 but the event raised a whopping £8,265!

Now aged 16, Harry has moved on to adult care but he recently popped in to present the cheque and say a final thank you to the team who cared for him.

Matron Sarah said:

‘We’re over the moon with Harry’s fundraising which has helped us make a huge leap towards our fundraising target. We are so grateful to Harry as well as all his family and friends who supported the event. Thanks to Harry’s fundraising we can start work on creating some child-friendly artwork to brighten up the ward which is going to make the world of difference for patients’

The Ward L42 Team are still fundraising with Leeds Hospitals Charity to make improvements to the ward environment.

Our Play Team recently took part in a creative session with Leeds artist Burley Banksy on their team away day. Burley Banksy led an interactive workshop focused on expressing the power of play, imagination and teamwork through artwork.

Working in teams, Play Leaders and Play Specialists designed and decorated a series of play-themed electric boxes, inspired by Burley Banksy’s artwork across the city. From bright colours and playful scenes to designs inspired by the children and families they support, each team brought their own ideas to life.

The session provided an opportunity for the team step away from day-to-day responsibilities and celebrate the creativity that sits at the heart of the Play Team's work, with some truly impressive creations produced along the way!

Huge thanks to Leeds Hospitals Charity and Burley Banksy for organising this brilliant experience for our Play Team.

Before you go to bed tonight, don’t forget to set your clocks back 1 hour!

On Sunday 25 October, the clocks go back 1 hour at 2am. While many of us will enjoy an extra hour in bed, let’s also take a moment to recognise our dedicated NHS colleagues and everyone across the country working through the night.

Make sure to set your clocks back before bed tonight so you’re not caught out!

If your child is aged 2 or 3, free flu vaccinations are now available to help protect them this winter.

Flu can be serious for young children and can lead to complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

Vaccination can help reduce their risk of becoming seriously unwell.

Most children aged 2 and 3 are offered a quick and painless nasal spray vaccine.

Children aged 2 and 3 can get their flu vaccination through their GP practice or a participating community pharmacy. Find out more in the comments.

Today is Allied Health Professionals (AHP) Day!

Did you know that Allied Health Professionals are the third largest clinical workforce within health and care?

There are over 100 AHPs working across Leeds Children’s Hospital including:
- Physiotherapists
- Dietitians
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Occupational Therapists

AHPs support patients and their families across all our wards, outpatient department and in their homes, nurseries and schools. Many of our AHPs also work in highly specialist clinical and research-based roles.

Today we thanked our AHPs at a special event where we celebrated their expertise, commitment and compassion. Colleagues took time out to get together and enjoy tea and cake, a bake-off and a free tombola.

Thank you to all our dedicated AHPs who work hard all year round to help our children and young people achieve their best quality of life. Happy Allied Health Professionals Day!
