It might look like we’re “just” waving scarves and ribbon sticks… (and yes, it is lots of fun!! ) but there is actually so much development happening in those moments.

When your little one is waving a scarf fast, slow, up high, down low (even if it looks a bit random at times 🙈), they are learning how to listen, process and respond to instructions. This is such an important early skill: being able to hear a word like “up” or “stop” and begin to connect it to an action (which later supports things like following instructions at nursery and school).

All of that movement is also building body awareness and coordination (understanding where their body is in space and how to control their movements). Even something as simple as changing speed (fast… slow…) helps develop their ability to regulate and control their bodies.

And then the ribbon sticks… are amazing for gross motor development and early hand-eye coordination. As children watch the ribbons move and try to control them, they are strengthening the connection between what they see and how they move (and even building strength needed later for things like writing).

We also use these moments to introduce early language and concepts (fast/slow, high/low, stop/go, around), all in a really natural, playful way.

And alongside all of that… they’re building confidence and social skills (joining in, copying, trying something new 🥹)
