Great projects aren’t just about what we deliver, but how we deliver them 🌍

Across the Mining Remediation Authority, sustainability is an important part of our work, helping us protect the environment, improve resilience to climate change, make responsible decisions and deliver lasting benefits for communities in mining areas.

Making that happen relies on the knowledge, skills and experience of our people. From colleagues with specialist environmental expertise to those continuing to develop their professional skills and qualifications, we’re always learning and looking for ways to make our work more sustainable.

This World Sustainability Day, we’re celebrating the people behind that work and some of the ways we’re putting our sustainability ambitions into practice.

Last week, we marked a landmark moment at Seaham Garden Village, as the mine water heat network officially went live.

In this video, you'll hear directly from some of the partners behind the scheme on what makes this project special and what it means for the community.

Naturally warm water from the former Dawdon coal mine is now providing clean, secure and affordable heat to affordable homes, turning a legacy of coalfield infrastructure into something that benefits the community it once employed all over again.

We operate more than 80 mine water treatment schemes across Great Britain, so there's real potential to replicate this model elsewhere, bringing similar benefits to other former coalfield communities.
Take a look back at the big day.

Great to support the next generation of geologists getting hands-on experience at one of our most complex mining remediation sites.

This week we welcomed students from Oldham Sixth Form College to the residential area in Ashton-under-Lyne to see how geology translates into real-world civil engineering, including the recent excavation of our largest-ever working platform and the complex ground investigation needed to safely cap a historical mine shaft.

Thank you to Bethell Group Plc for hosting the visit and for continuing to deliver this important work for local residents.

Proud moment: Families moving into new affordable homes at Seaham Garden Village are now benefiting from sustainable heating powered by water from abandoned coal mines beneath their feet.

Britain's latest large-scale mine water heat network has officially gone live, supplying low-carbon heat to 750 affordable homes, using naturally warm mine water from our Dawdon treatment scheme.

🎬 Watch our partners share what this milestone means, and find out how this innovative scheme works.

This project is a collaboration alongside Durham County Council, Vital Energi Utilities Limited, Karbon Homes and Esh Group, and shows how repurposing our industrial heritage can deliver clean, secure and reasonably priced heating to communities today.

Great to see progress continuing on the Dylife Mine remediation project. 👷‍♀️

A strong example of partners working together to tackle the legacy of historic metal mining and protect Wales’ environment. 🌿

We welcomed colleagues from Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales operations team and the Mining Remediation Authority , to give them an insight into how works are progressing on the Dylife Mine remediation project – the timings worked well as we were finalising installation of the concrete canvas in the channel lining preventing river water entering the below ground mine workings.

Ever thought about going for that qualification you keep putting off? 🌱

Angie, our Head of Sustainability, did exactly that. After a successful application and interview, she's now a Chartered Environmentalist and full member of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP).

It took time, effort, and support, but Angie says it's already paying off: more confidence in her role, a stronger network of peers facing similar challenges, and new opportunities to keep learning.

We're proud to back our people to invest in their development, and Angie's achievement has already inspired others in her team to start their own accreditation journeys too.

🌱 Innovative engineering can often solve complex ground stability problems with minimal disruption.

When a sinkhole appeared at Marden Farm Allotments in North Tyneside, a traditional repair could have meant removing raised beds, greenhouses and other features from the plot, with works lasting up to two weeks.

Instead, we used an innovative resin injection technique to stabilise the collapse from below, completing the repair in just two days while keeping disruption to a minimum.

The photos show the story from start to finish and how a different approach helped make the area safe while allowing allotment users to keep enjoying a much-loved community space. 📸

In April 2025, six homes on Dewar Avenue in Kincardine suffered subsidence damage linked to historical coal mining, leading to the properties being demolished last summer and the local Community Centre closing.

A year on, and our work is nearly complete. We've recently been carrying out ground stabilisation works using grout and gravel injection and we've been working with Fife Council as they decide a way forward for the Community Centre.

We continue to support residents and monitoring of Dewar Avenue and the surrounding area will remain in place until at least spring 2027.

Complex incidents like this require careful, thorough investigation before any remediation work can begin. The full extent of the underground ground conditions needs to be fully mapped before any intervention, to ensure work is safe and effective.

We know this has been a worrying and unsettling time for the Kincardine community. We're grateful for everyone's patience and understanding as we work to make the area safe.

It's great to see another milestone reached at Camberwell Drive, Ashton-under-Lyne 🚧

Thanks to Bethell Group Plc and everyone involved for their continued work to keep people safe and deliver a permanent solution for local residents.

🛡️ Delivering the infrastructure protecting homes and communities from the impacts of historical mining!

On behalf of the Mining Remediation Authority, Bethell have been delivering works to permanently cap off a mine shaft at Camberwell Drive, Ashton-under-Lyne.

🚧 Works reached the latest milestone with the completion of a massive 16m x 16m x 5.2m excavation - requiring around 256 truckloads of muck to be transported away!

Two concrete piers were removed using wire cutting methods, minimising noise on site compared to alternative removal methods and reducing the impact on the residents nearby.

đź‘· We are now pouring reinforced blinding concrete to create a base for our teams to start fixing steel, ready for the installation of the permanent capping slab.

We'd like to thank the local community for their continued patience throughout these works, as we deliver the permanent solution the residents wanted.

⚠️ Know the signs. Stay Mine Safe.

Many communities across Great Britain live alongside our mining legacy. While mining hazards are rare, knowing what to look out for can help keep you, your family and your community safe.

Hazards can include ground collapse, mine gas, water issues and unsafe mine entries.

Our short Stay Mine Safe video highlights some of the warning signs and explains what to do if you spot a potential hazard.

If something doesn't look right, don't ignore it. Our emergency hazard line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
