Ever wondered why so many UK boarding schools ask which guardianship company you're using?

Schools remain responsible for their pupils' welfare, so working with an AEGIS Gold Standard accredited guardian gives them external, independently verified assurance around safeguarding, without having to inspect the company themselves. A growing number of schools now keep a list of approved guardianship companies, and inclusion is typically limited to AEGIS-accredited providers, with preference for Gold Standard.

Most UK boarding schools require any pupil under 18 to have a UK-based guardian if their parents live outside the UK, including UK citizens living abroad. It's based on where the parents live, not the family's nationality. University students don't usually need one, though foundation and pre-university courses often do.

Membership of a guardianship body is one thing. Gold Standard is another.

To reach Gold Standard, AEGIS doesn't just review a company's paperwork, inspectors visit a sample of its approved host families in person and interview students, parents and hosts directly, to check that what the policies say matches what families actually experience. It's not a desk review, someone has genuinely visited the homes where pupils stay.

Every adult in one of our host family households is enhanced DBS-checked, renewed every three years, and we visit every home in person before a pupil is ever placed there.

We also take two character references for the primary host, review each household annually, and make sure hosts have completed safeguarding training before they welcome a student. Safety isn't a box to tick, it's the foundation of everything we do.

What exactly is a "boarding house"? It's the residential building where pupils live during term time, led by a house master or house mistress, often with a matron or dame supporting daily routines and wellbeing. Houses build their own traditions and rivalries, from sports tournaments to singing competitions known as house shouts, and it's these shared experiences that give pupils a real sense of belonging.

Not all guardianship packages cover the same things, and the headline fee doesn't always tell the full story.

A complete service should include vetted host family accommodation at exeats and short holidays, airport transfers at the start and end of term, attendance at parents' meetings, 24-hour emergency contact, and regular written reports home. It's worth comparing line by line, not just on price.
