An 18th century bloodsucker 🩸

This curious tube from Stourhead’s collection might look harmless enough, but in the 18th century it was a steering wheel for a living, breathing, bloodsucking worm! Yes, this is a leech tube for medicinal leeches.

Bloodletting was once considered a vital treatment and leeches became living medical instruments. Look closely and you can still spot traces of blood lining the inside of the tube, a chilling reminder of its former purpose.

While it might sound like something from a Halloween tale, medicinal leeches are still used in hospitals today to help restore blood flow after surgery.

Some ideas never quite die… 👀
