📢 Glemsford Neighbourhood Plan – Important clarification about Babergh’s SHELAA:

Babergh and Mid Suffolk have published their latest Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA) to support the preparation of their new Joint Local Plan and neighbourhood plans across the districts.

Please be clear: this is NOT a development list for Glemsford.
The SHELAA covers sites submitted across the Babergh and Mid Suffolk districts for consideration for potential housing and economic development. It is an evidence document, not a list of sites approved or allocated for development.

A site appearing in the SHELAA does not mean it will be developed. Inclusion does not grant planning permission, allocate land for development or mean that a site has been selected for future housing.

The assessment is one part of the evidence that will inform future planning decisions. Further work will be needed before decisions are made about which sites, if any, should be proposed for development.

As we prepare a new Glemsford Neighbourhood Plan, we will consider the relevant evidence alongside local needs, residents’ views, the character of our village and the potential impact of development.
Our aim is to produce a Plan that does more than manage housing. It should help shape the future of Glemsford and reflect what residents want our village to become.

We will keep residents informed as the Glemsford Neighbourhood Plan progresses.

The Babergh and Mid Suffolk Joint Local Plan will guide development in the district, until the year 2045

The Neighbourhood Plan Working Group met for the third time on 2 September, as work continues towards the submission of a new Neighbourhood Plan.

Further development in Glemsford is expected, and a new Neighbourhood Plan would give the village an opportunity to influence where and how that development takes place.

We are currently awaiting confirmation from Babergh on the number of new homes that will be allocated to Glemsford. Changes to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) also mean that a Neighbourhood Plan must now allocate sites for development. It is no longer possible to submit a Neighbourhood Plan with no sites allocated.

During the last meeting, the Working Group met with a consultant to receive advice and a suggested approach for moving forward with the new Neighbourhood Plan.

We are aiming to hold a community engagement event in November, which will provide residents with an opportunity to learn more about the process and have their say. Further details will be shared in due course.

We have also created a dedicated page to provide updates on the progress of the Neighbourhood Plan. We encourage residents to follow this page to stay informed of the work.

The village litter pick was held on Sunday 6th September, a lovely sunny day which saw 16 adults and 4 children collect a total of approximately 20 bagfuls.
The rubbish was mainly drink cans & glass/plastic bottles, all of which could have been recycled if they hadn’t been dropped onto our roadside verges and into our hedges.
There were also lots of cigarette filter ends, tricky to pick up but worth it because they contain plastic.
Larger items - a dog bed, 3 car tyres and part of a car exhaust.
9 bags were collected from Hobbs Lane/Park Lane and over 5 from the Horseshoe and part of Cavendish Lane combined.
Thanks to all who volunteered and to Babergh District Council for collecting the filled bags the following day.
The next village litter pick will be held in Spring 2027.
