The Environmental Protection Agency was established on World Environment Day, June 5, 1996. The Offices of the EPA is located in Ganges Street, Sophia.

The Act mandates the Agency to oversee the effective management, conservation, protection and improvement of the environment. It also requires that the Agency takes the necessary measures to ensure the prevention and control of pollution, assessment of the impact of economic development on the environment and the sustainable use of natural resources. Littering is a punishable offence under the law. Persons found guilty will be fined and failure to comply will result in prosecution through the Courts under the Litter Regulations (2013)

This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to promote compliance and maintain a cleaner environment for all.

The Environmental Protection Agency invites the public and stakeholders to participate in the survey as part of Guyana’s ongoing process to update its National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and prepare its 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Through captivating performances and thought-provoking storytelling, participants brought to life the urgent need for local action under the World Environment Day theme, 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞. 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞.

Members of the public, particularly students, representatives of NGOs, government agencies, and the diplomatic corps, were enlightened on the actions that can be taken to address climate change and safeguard our environment.

📢 Call for Proposals!

The Environmental Protection Agency Guyana invites eligible communities and community-based groups in the North Rupununi and Kanuku Mountains Area to apply for Small Grants under the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes II – Guyana Project.

This opportunity supports initiatives focused on Sustainable Land and Water Management, including capacity building, monitoring and management, livelihood support, restoration activities, and traditional knowledge integration.

🗓️ Grant Period: August 2026 – June 2027
💰 Grants: From US$10,000 available
⏳ Deadline: June 30, 2026
