Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, the Honourable Priya Manickchand, this morning highlighted Guyana’s sustainable development initiatives during an engagement with His Majesty King Charles III at the Promenade Gardens.

Minister Manickchand commended His Majesty’s longstanding environmental leadership and contributions to Guyana through Iwokrama, recognising the country’s efforts to preserve its forests while earning revenue from their protection.

She also expressed appreciation for the expertise of The King’s Foundation in supporting the development of greener, healthier public spaces that reflect Guyana’s character and meet the needs of its people.

This morning, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, the Honourable Priya Manickchand, met with contractors undertaking the weeding, clearing and de-bushing of the Le Repentir Cemetery to reiterate that NO BURNING is permitted anywhere on the site.

Any contractor found lighting a fire will be summarily dismissed without payment and may face charges and prosecution.

The Ministry once again apologises to residents and road users for the inconvenience caused yesterday and thanks the public for their patience as the work continues.

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has dismissed contractors who breached their contracts by lighting fires instead of carrying out weeding at the Le Repentir Cemetery.

The Ministry said the contractors responsible have been dealt with and efforts are underway to extinguish the fire, while apologising to residents and road users for the inconvenience caused.

It has also warned that any other contractor found lighting fires will be summarily dismissed, required to pay for any expenses incurred or damage caused, and blacklisted from securing future work with the Ministry.

We sincerely apologise to residents and road users for any inconvenience they may be suffering as a result of contractors who breached their contract and lit fires instead of weeding at the Le Repentir Cemetery.

Please be assured that those contractors were summarily addressed and the fire is being put out.

Every other contractor who lights a fire will not only be summarily dismissed but will have to pay for any expense incurred or damage caused and will be blacklisted from getting work again with this Ministry.
