This month, Jersey Coastguard brought together our Search and Rescue partners for the bi-annual Water Safety Forum. 🌊

We reflected on the summer season, discussed incident trends, and explored how we can continue working together to keep island waters safe.

With welfare-related incidents on the rise, Mind Jersey highlighted how we can recognise vulnerability and support people in crisis. We topped off the event with a tour of the new marine rescue facility, an important addition to Jersey’s emergency services.

Staying safe on the coast during Storm Austen

Jersey Met has issued a Red Wind Warning, with very strong winds expected from Thursday evening and the most challenging conditions forecast during the early hours of Friday. We urge all mariners, boat owners and water users to take extra precautions ahead of the approaching weather.

🟡 Avoid the coastlines or going out on the water during the warning period.
🟡 Make sure your vessel is safe and secure before the weather closes in.
🟡 Conditions are forecast to be very rough, with a large swell running.
🟡 Keep up to date with the latest weather forecasts and marine safety information.
🟡 In an emergency at sea, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Keep well clear of harbour walls, piers, slipways and exposed coastal areas, and never take unnecessary risks near the sea during severe weather.

Your safety is our priority. Please respect the conditions and follow the latest advice from Jersey Met and the emergency services.

Preparing for the Forecast‌ 🌊🌧️

With strong winds forecasted from Thursday evening, continuing through Friday, we advise those closer to the coast to exercise caution during periods of strong winds. We also recommend all boat owners to take a few moments to check that their vessels and moorings are secure ahead of the deteriorating conditions as a few simple checks can make a big difference:

✅ Check mooring lines for wear and secure attachment
✅ Inspect fenders, covers and any deck equipment
✅ Secure any loose items that could be blown overboard
✅ Bail out your boat if appropriate
✅ Keep an eye on the latest weather forecasts and warnings

🚨If you see or are in an emergency at sea, dial 999 and ask for Jersey Coastguard.
