This is Zion

“Last year, while on holiday in Kenya, my wife gave birth to our son, Zion, prematurely.

He was tiny, fragile, and needed specialised care.

For three long months, we prayed and waited while he fought to grow stronger in hospital before he was finally strong enough to travel.

When it was time for my wife and Zion to return to Jersey, we faced a mountain of challenges, arranging flights and accommodation,

And carrying the emotional weight of reuniting our family after such a difficult time.

That’s when Family First Jersey stepped in.

They made what felt impossible, possible.

Family First helped cover costs for travel and accommodation so we could be in London with our three daughters to welcome Zion home.

And when we finally arrived in Jersey, they greeted us with kindness and a thoughtful starter pack for our little warrior.

It gave us peace of mind and reminded us that we weren’t alone.

That support meant the world to us. Family First truly made a difference for our family."

A hospital letter arrives,

and within days a family is packing for the UK.

What many people don’t realise is that the mortgage, the rent and the everyday bills do not pause while a parent sits beside a hospital bed.

When a child needs treatment off island, a parent often has to step away from work for weeks or even months.

Flights and somewhere to stay are the costs most people think of. The lost income and the bills still landing at home, are the part that catches families off guard.

So we meet with the family before they travel and talk through what is worrying them most.

Then we help pull together funding from the charities and services across the island, so families aren’t left chasing it all themselves.

What that looks like is different for every family, because every situation is different.

Friends of the Jersey Neonatal Unit
Jersey Children's Charity,

to make sure the right people know what a family needs.

This week is Hidden Disabilities Week, we're encouraging everyone to remember that not every disability is visible!

For many people, daily challenges may not be obvious on the outside, but they are very real. Lots of our families have both parents and children with Hidden Disabilities that they navigate every day. A little understanding, empathy and flexibility can help create environments where everyone feels accepted and included 💛

This is Billie.

"I gave birth to our strong girl Billie in Southampton, 5 weeks early due to being diagnosed with placenta accreta.

I had to move to Southampton at 32 weeks pregnant, which was very difficult leaving family and friends, and delivered her at 35 weeks.

Billie was born under general anaesthetic, which came with a lot of scary risks, but the surgery went much better than the surgeons were expecting, which was amazing.

I can't thank Family First enough for all their support.

Me and my family could not have managed the experience without them. They supported us for the whole duration while I was in Southampton, and without them I'm not quite sure how we would have managed." - Chelsea Deeks

💜 Baby Loss Awareness Week 💜

This week, we’re thinking of all the families who have been affected by the loss of a baby.

At Family First, we sometimes sadly support families going through this heartbreaking experience. We know that no words can take away the pain, but having the right support around you can make a difference.

We’re grateful to be able to signpost families to the wonderful Philip's Footprints charity here on the island, who offer support to families affected by baby loss.

Our thoughts are with every family who has experienced this loss, whether recently or many years ago. 💜

🌟 Rosie’s Journey of Hope — Completed 🌟

On Thursday last week everyone gathered at the cycle track to celebrate something truly special. Rosie has officially completed her Journey of Hope, cycling the full 464 miles and raising an incredible £2,600 for Family First with her original goal being £500!

What began as a sisterly tribute has become a story that’s touched so many. Mile after mile, Rosie carried her Brave Bear at back of her bike riding for herself, for her sister and our families who knows what it means to face difficult journeys far from home.

Seeing her cross that final milestone surrounded by family, friends and supporters was a moment full of pride, love and joy!

💛 Thank you to everyone who donated, encouraged and followed Rosie on this journey!

The fund's raised from Rosie's Journey of Hope will help Family First continue supporting families who must travel off‑island for their child’s specialist care.
