🇲🇼🇲🇿 Malawi and Mozambique strengthen cooperation on agricultural trade

Malawi and Mozambique have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures, deepening bilateral cooperation and supporting safer, more efficient and predictable cross-border trade.

At the signing ceremony in Tete on 22 October 2026, Malawi’s Principal Secretary for Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Resources Development, Erica Maganga, highlighted priorities for implementation, including joint pest-risk assessment, improved SPS certification procedures, officer training and guidance for traders.

Closing the ceremony, Mozambique’s Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries, Acubar Paulo Batista, called for coordinated action, timely information-sharing and continued technical dialogue to turn the agreement into practical benefits. He noted that effective implementation can help reduce delays and unnecessary costs, protect people, animals and plants, and support producers and businesses across both countries.

The agreement aligns with regional efforts to facilitate trade and improve connectivity, including the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project (SATCP), implemented by Malawi and Mozambique's Ministries of Transport with World Bank support.

Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to working together to advance regional integration and deliver tangible results for their people.

🇲🇼🇲🇿🇿🇲 MALAWI REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO NACALA DEVELOPMENT CORRIDOR

Malawi has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation under the Nacala Development Corridor, with a call for practical progress on outstanding agreements and effective implementation of decisions made by the Corridor’s governing bodies.

Speaking at the opening of the Tripartite Meeting of the Nacala Development Corridor Sector Clusters in Maputo, Mozambique, Director of Policy and Planning in the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, Mr. Victor Lungu, said Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia share a responsibility to build an efficient transport and logistics network that connects their economies, facilitates trade and supports sustainable economic transformation.

He called for clear priorities, realistic timelines and clearly assigned responsibilities, while highlighting the need to advance three pending Memoranda of Understanding covering SPS Agriculture; Standards, Quality Assurance, Accreditation and Metrology (SQAM); and the Chipata–Serenje project.

The four-day technical meeting, running from 6–9 October 2026, brings together 12 sector clusters and thematic groups from Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia. Participants are reviewing implementation of directives from the 10th NDCMC Board Meeting and updating action plans covering the period up to 30 June 2027.

Malawi has expressed readiness to share its progress, learn from Mozambique and Zambia, and continue working with the Nacala Development Corridor Secretariat and development partners to advance regional trade and connectivity.

📢 Today at Crossroads Hotel: National Single Window Sensitisation Workshop + Official ICT Equipment Handover

The Ministry of Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism is hosting a critical sensitisation workshop on the Malawi National Single Window (MNSW) system for Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

A major highlight of today’s programme is the official handover of specialised ICT equipment to participating MDAs.

This equipment will strengthen institutional capacity and provide the digital infrastructure needed to effectively implement and sustain the National Single Window system. It is a practical step to support MDAs as they move from awareness to full utilisation of the platform.

The National Single Window enables traders to submit information through a single electronic entry point for permits, licences and clearances — making import, export and transit processes faster, simpler, more transparent and more predictable.

Supported by the World Bank under the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project (SATCP), this workshop and equipment distribution mark another important milestone in modernising Malawi’s trade environment in line with Malawi 2063.

The equipment is being handed over by Mr. Davis Sado, the Director of Administration at the Ministry of Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism.

Together, we are building a more efficient and competitive trading system for Malawi.

🚧 A New Chapter for Malawi's Road Infrastructure Begins! 🇲🇼

Today marked the official launch of the rehabilitation of the 47.23 km Liwonde–Matawale (M003) Road, a transformative investment under the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project, financed by the World Bank.

The project will improve connectivity between Liwonde and Zomba, reduce travel time and transport costs, strengthen trade along the Nacala Corridor, improve access to markets and tourism, and enhance road safety through Malawi's first iRAP Star Rating for Schools initiative.

This is more than the construction of a road—it's an investment in safer journeys, stronger communities, economic growth, and a more connected Malawi.

Together, we are building roads that drive development.
