With the aim to strengthen food manufacturing and halal, the Department of Science and Technology Ilocos Region (DOST Ilocos Region), through DOST Ilocos Sur, in partnership with JAT Food Product and RLL Online Shop, conducted training on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Food Safety, Packaging and Labelling, and Halal Awareness Training on September 24, 2026, at JAT Food Product in Vigan City, bringing together participants from various food-related business sectors.

Ms. Mary Grace M. Caburnay, Project Technical Assistant I, discussed Food Safety, particularly Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in the food industry. She focused on Basic Food Hygiene, Food Hazards, Food Safety Standards, and later discussed Packaging and Labelling. The sessions underscored the importance of proper hygiene, sanitation, procedural processes, as well as appropriate packaging and labeling in food production to safeguard consumer health and enhance product quality.

The Halal lecture session focused on the fundamental concepts of Halal and the qualifications required for products, services, and processes to be recognized as Halal through an in-depth discussion of the Halal Concepts and Principles module. The session differentiated key terms such as Halal, Haram, Najis, Mushbooh, and others, citing specific examples while emphasizing the core values, ethical standards, and religious requirements that govern Halal compliance. It also highlighted the direct correlation between Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and effective Halal management, stressing the importance of proper manufacturing procedures, hygiene and sanitation, quality assurance, traceability, and operational control in preserving the integrity, safety, and authenticity of Halal-certified products throughout the entire production process.

To reinforce their learning, participants engaged in practical group activities where they evaluated their current production processes, identified potential food hazards, and developed strategies to integrate current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and food safety measures into their daily operations.

Ammom kadi? (Alam mo ba?)
