Safe Families at Life Connections The trauma of child abuse can be devastating and have lasting consequences for a child. It is from this philosophy Safe Families for Children (SFFC) was born.

Safe Families partners with entire communities to mobilize a movement of people organized into teams (Circles of Support) dedicated to keeping parents supported, children safe, and families together. Many instances of abuse and neglect can be prevented if families in crisis had a support network of caring individuals to help them in a time of need. In 2003, SFFC founder, Dave Anderson, found that if loving families can provide a safe and caring environment for a child at critical times, we can not only prevent harm to children, but we can enhance a parent's ability to provide what that child needs. Safe Families for Children (SFFC) is a national movement of compassion that gives hope to families in crisis. Our dedication to family support, stabilization, and child abuse prevention is driven by responsibility for the well-being of children in our communities. SFFC partners with churches, local community agencies, volunteer families as well as government organizations across the country to build a volunteer network. The SFFC network provides essential extended family-like relationships to nearly 1,000 children and families annually. Learn more at www.safe-families.org

When we walk alongside families, the goal is that they are heard, they feel supported, and that they are not alone!

We have three new families reach out to Safe Families at Life Connections for help this week. Please join us in praying that they will experience the love and care from our team and volunteers that they need right now. Please pray for protection over their children and that their families will experience the transformative love of God in their difficult hour. Please pray for freedom from the pain and suffering caused by addiction and unhealed trauma, and for the resources each unique situation needs. Please join me in praying that not only will their situations improve but that lives would be transformed and they would get to walk in the purpose, freedom, and peace that the Lord has for them.

Thank you for being our supporters, volunteers, allies, and prayer warriors! ❤️

A crisis—such as a parent losing housing, a severe mental health episode, domestic violence, substance use, or a child's unaddressed behavioral/mental health crisis—prompts someone (a doctor, school official, neighbor, or police officer) to call a state hotline or CPS.

A large majority of child welfare cases (around 62% to 76% nationally) stem from allegations of neglect rather than intentional physical abuse. Structural hardships like homelessness, lack of child care, or food insecurity are frequently interpreted by the system as parental unfitness.

This is why we exist. Safe Families for Children works on the PREVENTION side so that more families can stay together. To learn more about Safe Families, go to https://safe-families.org/.

Last week was an exciting week for our team! Safe Families Program Manager Kiana Schoen and Life Connections Program Manager Michele Hooper completed their Standards of Quality Training in Family Strengthening and Support.

Upon certification, they will join Director Sarah Boll in becoming fewer than 200 individuals in Minnesota to hold this credential through the National Family Support Network.

This is an important step in strengthening our programs through nationally recognized standards and best practices in family support. We’re proud to continue growing our knowledge and collaboration to better serve families in our community!

At Safe Families for Children, we believe that when parents are supported by a caring, compassionate community, hope grows, burdens become lighter, and families are strengthened.

When ordinary people say "YES" to extraordinary acts of love, we're reminded of the beautiful opportunity we all have to make a difference!

Prevention is widely recognized as an effective, efficient, and economically sound approach because it stops complications before they start, maximizes limited resources, and delivers a massive return on investment.

Preventing child abuse and neglect means meeting parents exactly where they are while also putting the health and safety of children first. Prevention makes keeping children and families together—safely—the top priority in any child welfare system.

There is a common misconception that child welfare intervention is primarily about the most extreme and heartbreaking cases that make headlines. Those cases do require immediate action. But the reality is that many families who come to the attention of child welfare—and drive up unmanageable caseload numbers—are facing challenges that could have been addressed much earlier with the right supports in place: a parent overwhelmed by circumstances, a family without stable housing or child care, a medical emergency, or a caregiver without anyone to call for help.

But we have also witnessed the opposite: when families receive timely support—safe child care during moments of crisis, access to basic necessities, connection to resources, and ongoing community-based support—the outcome changes drastically. Families stabilize. Parents gain confidence and tools. Children remain safely connected to the people who love them, and the child welfare system has no reason to get involved.

This is why we exist. Children Safe. Families Together.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Safe Families for Children (SFFC) stands alongside survivors. Our mission is to keep children safe and surround families facing crisis with a supportive community.

By offering a safe, temporary home for children and a network of extended family-like support for parents, we give moms and dads the breathing room they need to seek help, find safety, and rebuild their lives.

As we wrap up the week, we’re excited to highlight our new Parent Workspace & Kids’ Playspace at the Safe Families office in Alexandria!

Over the past few weeks, parents have used the space to complete paperwork, submit applications, send emails, and connect with local resources while their children enjoy a safe place to play, read, and have fun. Parents have also benefited from the convenience of grabbing diapers, clothing, and receiving lactation support from Life Connections in a single stop!

This space is one of the ways that the Safe Families and Life Connections collaboration has created practical, holistic support for families in our community!
