The Alaska Judicial Council is a seven-member citizens' board created by the Alaska Constitution.

Council members screen and nominate judicial applicants, evaluate the performance of judges standing for retention, and conduct justice-related research.

Last week, seven attorneys applied to the Alaska Judicial Council for the position of Alaska Public Defender. Alaska Statutes 18.85.030 requires the Alaska Judicial Council to nominate two or more applicants for the Alaska Public Defender position.

The Judicial Council members will meet in February, 2026 to interview the applicants and to hold a public hearing.

Last week, five attorneys applied to the Alaska Judicial Council for two vacancies on the Anchorage Superior Court, five attorneys have applied for a position on the Fairbanks Superior Court, six attorneys have applied for a new position on the Palmer Superior Court, two attorneys have applied to the vacancy on the Kotzebue Superior Court, and two attorneys have applied to the Nome Superior Court.

The Judicial Council members will meet in February, 2026 to interview the applicants and to hold public hearings.
