Fire Departments Respond to 20th Street Structure Fire
BAKER CITY, Ore. — At approximately 3:15 p.m. on September 23, the Baker City Fire Department and Baker County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received multiple reports through both business and emergency lines of a possible structure fire in the 1800 block of 20th Street.
While en route, crews observed a large plume of black smoke and requested mutual aid from Baker Rural Fire District.
Upon arrival, crews found a working structure fire involving a house, a detached garage, and a vehicle, with smoke and flames visible. Crews established a water supply from a nearby hydrant. The resident had safely exited the house before the first units arrived. The resident was transported to the hospital for a medical condition. Additional mutual aid was requested, and North Powder Rural Fire District responded.
Crews initially launched an aggressive exterior attack, which significantly limited the fire’s spread. As additional units and personnel arrived, hose lines were advanced into the house. The fire did not spread to neighboring structures or properties.
The property sustained significant fire and smoke damage. The Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
Baker City Fire Department crews returned later that evening after rising winds exposed a hidden fire. This was quickly extinguished, and other areas of concern were reinforced.
The American Red Cross is assisting the resident who has been displaced.
A total of 24 firefighters from four departments responded: Baker Rural Fire Rescue,Keating Rural Fire District, North Powder Rural Fire District and Baker City Fire Department.
