Memorial Day gives Americans the opportunity to remember and honor those who died in military service to the United States. The earliest recorded observance of Memorial Day was organized by formerly enslaved Black Americans in Charleston, South Carolina. From the Revolutionary War to modern-day conflicts, foreign-born immigrants have been an integral part of the U.S. Armed Forces. According to the Department of Defense, more than 700,000 foreign-born veterans live in the United States, and approximately 40,000 foreign-born individuals currently serve on active duty. We remember and honor all of the individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you.
