IT'S GO TIME!

Part of preparedness is practice. This week, to wrap up National Preparedness Month, we encourage you to:

➡ Do a Home Safety Check. Check your fire extinguishers’ expiration date and replace the batteries in your fire alarms, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors.

➡ Conduct an Evacuation Drill. Practice your family’s meeting spot by conducting an evacuation drill at your home.

➡ Update and Review Your Emergency Kit. Review your kits and replace expired items, missing items, and seasonal items. Now is a good time to update or restock your winter preparedness kits in your home and car.

Remember, you should be practicing these actions at least annually, and ideally, emergency kits should be reviewed and updated at least every 6 months. Set recurring reminders in your calendar to earmark time to preserve your preparedness! ⏰📆📝🎒

Preparedness starts at home—Ensuring the safety features in your home are operational helps you prevent disasters for your family.

Things like fire extinguishers, carbon dioxide detectors, smoke alarms, and home insurance safeguard your family’s wellbeing.

Replace batteries, check expiration dates, and verify home insurance policies are valid and copies are stored in a firesafe, waterproof container in your emergency preparedness kit bi-annually (every six months).

One of the most overlooked, yet critical, aspects of emergency preparedness doesn’t cost a thing and is something every one of us can take control of: our social connection.

Studies conducted by social scientists after major disasters make the importance of social connection-- knowing those around you, including your neighbors-- clear. Communities that have stronger social ties respond better and recover faster after disaster.

Knowledge is power and, in an emergency, having the right knowledge can save your life. We encourage you to “Be in the Know” this September:

Know Your Risks🚨

Risks vary across communities and Adams County is no different. Do you know your risks? (Check out our previous post for a brief overview of the unique risks to Adams County!)

Know Where to Go📍

Having a plan in place where you have identified a pre-designated evacuation location (whether that is a shelter, a family member or friend’s house, or other location) saves time in an emergency. Do you know your evacuation destination?

Know What to Bring 🧰

No one wants to be scrambling to gather essentials in an evacuation. Prepare a go-kit before an emergency so you can be ready when at a moment’s notice.

After an emergency or disaster, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Part of being prepared includes having supplies on hand to last at least 72 hours post-emergency or disaster.

Here are 5 quick tips for preparing your household’s emergency kit:

1️⃣Have a Checklist! There are checklists available online for any type of household. Visit ready.gov/kit for one good example of a checklist for basic emergency kits.

2️⃣Assess Your Household. When thinking about your basic kit, be sure to consider any special needs your household may have and make those additions to your kit.

3️⃣Have a Sturdy Foundation! Assemble your kit in a sturdy, easy to carry container such as a plastic tote or duffle bag.

4️⃣Maintain Your Kit. Emergency kits should be stored in a cool, dry place. Review your kit seasonally to replace expired items as needed and remember to rethink your needs annually and make updates to fit your family’s needs.

5️⃣Home, Work, Car. You never know where you may be when an emergency occurs, so we recommend keeping an emergency kit at home, at work, and in your car. Be prepared for 72+ hours in your home, 24+ hours sheltered at work, and 12+ hours stranded in your car.
