⏰ DON'T FORGET TO CHECK YOUR SMOKE ALARMS! 🔥

With the time change approaching, the Pender County Fire Marshal's Office is reminding everyone to take a few minutes to check their smoke alarms and make sure they're working properly.

Traditionally, we recommend changing the batteries in your smoke alarms when you change your clocks. However, if you have smoke alarms equipped with sealed, 10-year batteries, there's no need to replace the batteries every time the clocks change.

These sealed-battery smoke alarms are designed with a non-replaceable battery that lasts the life of the alarm, typically 10 years. Just remember:

âś… Test your alarms using the test button.

âś… Make sure alarms are installed on every level of your home and inside and outside sleeping areas.

âś… If you have traditional battery-powered alarms, replace the batteries as needed.

âś… If you have sealed 10-year battery alarms, test them regularly and replace the entire alarm when it reaches its expiration date or begins chirping due to a low battery.

🚨 Remember: Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they work!

A few minutes today could make all the difference tomorrow.

Stay safe, Pender County!

đź–¤ Honoring the Fallen. Never Forgotten.

Today, Deputy Fire Marshal Grafford represented the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office and Pender County Emergency Services while attending the funeral of Firefighter Andrew Brokes of the Durham Fire Department.

When a firefighter makes the ultimate sacrifice, the loss is felt far beyond the walls of their own firehouse. It is felt throughout the fire service family, a brotherhood and sisterhood bound together by a shared calling, a commitment to serve, and a willingness to put others before ourselves.

Today, we stood alongside our brothers and sisters in Durham to honor a life dedicated to serving others and to pay our respects to a firefighter who will never be forgotten. Though our patches may bear different names, we all wear the same badge of service, and when one of our own falls, we all grieve.

We honor the fallen by remembering their sacrifice, supporting the families and fellow firefighters left behind, and continuing the work they so courageously answered the call to do.

May Firefighter Andrew Brokes’s service and sacrifice never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family, friends, and the entire Durham Fire Department during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Firefighter Brokes, We’ll take it from here. 🖤🚒

🔥 A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO FIRE MARSHAL AMY BURTON! 🔥

The Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office is proud to announce that Fire Marshal Amy Burton has been named the North Carolina Fire Marshal of the Year by the North Carolina Fire Marshals Association!

Amy received the honor at the Association’s annual awards banquet in Greensboro, recognizing her leadership and dedication to fire prevention, life safety, code enforcement, fire investigations, and community risk reduction.

Throughout her career, Amy has not only worked to make our community safer, but has also made it a priority to develop and challenge the people around her. Today, the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office is attending the Pender County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) meeting as we continue working alongside our Pender County Emergency Management partners and local stakeholders to strengthen preparedness across our community.
Today’s guest speaker is Meteorologist Ian Boatman with the US National Weather Service Wilmington NC, who is sharing valuable information on weather threats, forecasting, and severe weather preparedness.
With Pender County’s coastal location and our experience with hurricanes, flooding, severe storms, and other weather-related emergencies, having timely and accurate information is an important part of protecting our community.

This morning, at dawn, crews from Station 16 raised the new Truck 16 bearing Old Glory in remembrance of 9/11/01. In addition to this display, the crew turns climbing the tower for 1 hour to honor the 343 firefighters killed on that day. Today we honor and today we remember.

Twenty-five years ago, 343 firefighters answered the call and went to work, never knowing they would not come home. They climbed the stairs of the World Trade Center while others were running down them. They entered a burning building because people were trapped inside. They did what firefighters have always done; they went toward the danger.

They were fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, friends, brothers, and sisters. They had families waiting for them, shifts to finish, and lives they expected to continue. Instead, thousands of families were left waiting for someone who would never walk through the door again.

The passage of 25 years does not lessen that sacrifice. If anything, it makes our responsibility to remember even greater.

At the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office, we believe remembering September 11th means more than simply honoring a date. It means honoring the people behind the numbers and ensuring that the next generation of emergency responders understands the history and sacrifice of the profession they are choosing.

This year, our office participated in the 9/11 Bridge Walk in Surf City, and attended the Cape Fear Community College memorial service alongside members of the Pender County Emergency Services Recruit Class. Some of those recruits were not even born when the towers fell. They never experienced the silence that followed, never watched the images unfold in real time, and never knew the world before September 11th.

But they will wear the same uniform. They will answer the same calls. And someday, they will be responsible for teaching the next generation what September 11th meant to the fire and emergency services.

That is why we remember. Not because they need us to remember them, but because we need to remember who they were, what they gave, and why we continue to serve.

Twenty-five years later, we still say their names in our hearts. We still honor their families. We still carry their sacrifice with us every time the tones drop and someone needs help.

343 firefighters. 343 lives. 343 families who never got to say goodbye.

We will never forget.

🇺🇸 September 11, 2001 — September 11, 2026
25 years. Always remembered. Forever honored.

🔥 Fire Scene Preservation: Training the Next Generation of Firefighters 🔥

Today, the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office taught Fire Scene Preservation, a class created by our office, to Pender County Emergency Services newest fire recruits. This class helps firefighters understand the importance of protecting a fire scene from the moment suppression begins through salvage and overhaul operations.

This training focuses on:
đźš’ Identifying potential evidence
🔎 Understanding what evidence may look like at a fire scene
🔥Understanding basic fire patterns and what they say about the fire’s behavior
🛑 Preserving evidence from unnecessary disturbance or destruction
🏠 Understanding how suppression, salvage, and overhaul operations can impact the fire scene
đź“‹ Maintaining the integrity of the scene for investigators

Firefighters play a critical role in the fire investigation process. What happens during suppression and overhaul can have a significant impact on the evidence left behind.

We’re proud to bring this training to our recruits and help build an understanding that fire suppression and fire investigation go hand in hand.

We want to congratulate these great new recruits and welcome them to the Pender County Emergency Services family! 🔥🚒
