Numbers tell a story, but behind every data point in public oversight is a West Virginian we serve. 📊

Our latest monthly metrics reports are now live on our website.

Independent oversight works best when it is open and accessible to everyone. Whether our team is surveying health facilities for safety, answering questions through our ombudsman programs, or protecting public resources from fraud and waste, these monthly numbers show accountability in action.

When state programs run efficiently and transparently, West Virginia families get the quality services and protections they deserve.

Finding the right care for a loved one is a major decision. Families across West Virginia want to know their parents and grandparents are safe, respected, and receiving the quality care they deserve. 💙💛

This National Assisted Living Week, we are honoring the residents who make these communities vibrant and the dedicated staff who care for them every day. 🏡

Our team works behind the scenes to protect the health and safety of West Virginians living in these facilities. Through regular surveys and independent oversight, our Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification helps ensure assisted living centers meet important safety standards. đź“‹

You have probably heard the phrase "fraud, waste, and abuse" before. But what is the actual difference between the three?đź’ˇ

🛑Fraud is intentional. It means someone is purposely deceiving or hiding information for personal or financial gain.

🗑️Waste is careless. It involves the inefficient or unnecessary use of public funds or resources.

⚠️Abuse is improper. It happens when someone misuses their authority, programs, services, or resources.

Our team works every day to identify and prevent these issues. We believe protecting public resources means protecting people. 🤝

If you see something that does not look right with the Departments of Health, Human Services, and Health Facilities, or related programs, you can report it directly to our team: oig.wv.gov/file-complaint

Behind every healing patient is a safe and clean environment. 🏥

This week is National Environmental Services Week! We are taking a moment to recognize the dedicated professionals who keep West Virginia healthcare facilities sanitary and welcoming. Infection control is a central part of our oversight work. When our facility surveyors visit hospitals and care centers across the state, they see firsthand how essential these teams are. Their daily dedication protects our most vulnerable family members and neighbors from preventable illness.

Next time you visit a loved one receiving care, please consider thanking the environmental services staff for their vital work! 💙💛

Vocabulary Check! 📝 Have you ever wondered how government oversight actually works?

People often use the words "audit" and "investigation" to mean the same thing. In our line of work, they are actually two totally different tools we use to protect public resources.

An audit takes a big picture look at systems. Our team reviews financial records and program processes to make sure health and human services run efficiently. We want to know if the rules are being followed and if tax dollars are being spent wisely.

An investigation zooms in on a specific problem. When someone reports an allegation of fraud or abuse, our investigators step in to uncover the facts about that specific situation.

Why should this matter to you?

Because behind every state program is a West Virginia family relying on it. Whether we are auditing a statewide system or investigating a single claim of fraud, the goal is exactly the same. We do this work to make sure public resources are protected and available for the people who truly need them.

Have a concern about how public resources are being used? You can report it directly to the Office of Inspector General: oig.wv.gov/file-complaint

Today we pause to remember the lives lost and the incredible courage shown on September 11.

More than two decades have passed, but the stories of first responders and everyday citizens helping one another still inspire us. That day taught our nation the true meaning of public service and community resilience.

Protecting the health, safety, and welfare of West Virginians is the heart of what we do. The heroes of 9/11 showed us what it means to put others first, and we honor their memory today by rededicating ourselves to serving our neighbors. Every time we work to improve government accountability or ensure safe care for our most vulnerable populations, we are working to protect the individuals and families who depend on us.

Take a moment today to remember the fallen and to thank the dedicated public servants in your community.

When a nursing home falls short of important safety standards, they are often required to pay a financial penalty. But what happens to that money?

It goes right back into protecting West Virginians.💙💛

Through the Civil Money Penalty Reinvestment Program, these funds are legally dedicated to projects that directly improve the quality of care and quality of life for facility residents.

That means taking accountability and turning it into positive action. These funds are used to:
🔹Protect and support residents if a facility needs to close
🔹Cover expenses to safely relocate individuals to new homes or community settings
🔹Empower resident and family councils so families have a stronger voice in their care
🔹Provide collaborator training for facility staff to improve daily operations

Every single application is carefully reviewed by our Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification Division and our federal partners. We ask the hard questions to ensure these projects deliver real benefits to our parents, grandparents, and loved ones.

Protecting our most vulnerable citizens is a shared responsibility.

When your loved ones needs care in a facility, you expect them to be safe and well protected. Ensuring that safety is exactly what our Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification Division team focuses on every single day. 🏥

To keep our oversight sharp, team members traveled to San Antonio last week for the Association of Health Facility Survey Agencies Training Conference. They trained alongside professionals from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and colleagues from across the country. 🤝

Together they tackled critical issues like making sure facilities are fully prepared for emergencies and finding ways to retain top tier employees.

By bringing the best ideas from across the nation back home to West Virginia, we are building a stronger workforce and ensuring better oversight for the patients and families who rely on these facilities. 💙💛

We all know the feeling of looking out over a quiet trail or a foggy mountain morning. West Virginians deeply value preserving the natural beauty of our home.

That same dedication to preservation drives our daily mission. Protecting public resources is just as important as protecting our state parks and rivers. When our audit and investigation teams work to identify waste and prevent fraud, they are making sure your tax dollars go exactly where they belong.

Have a beautiful Wild & Wonderful Wednesday!🌄💙💛

Protecting the resources West Virginians rely on takes continuous training and dedication. 🛡️

Last week, members of our Investigations & Fraud Management Division joined the Inspector General in Pittsburg for the 2026 United Council on Welfare Fraud National Conference. This was an incredible opportunity to learn the latest strategies to safeguard public programs and spend some quality time bonding as a team.

We are especially proud to share a major achievement! Acting Director Andrew Petitt received the Jack Heacock Distinguished Service Award. This honor recognizes his above and beyond commitment to sharing his expertise, time, and leadership with the national fraud prevention community. 👏

When our team brings nationally recognized skills back to the Mountain State, it directly benefits our communities. Better oversight means we can make sure vital assistance programs remain strong and available for the families who truly need them.

Please join us in congratulating Andrew and the entire team for their hard work!🌄
