🚨 REMINDER: Tomorrow is the Great Washington ShakeOut!

On Thursday, October 15, at 10:15 AM, communities across Washington will participate in the annual Great Washington ShakeOut earthquake drill.

Heads up, Central Whidbey! You may hear tsunami sirens sounding as part of scheduled testing. This is a drill, not an actual emergency.

We encourage everyone to take a moment to practice the three steps that can help protect you during an earthquake:

DROP • COVER • HOLD ON

Earthquakes can happen without warning, but taking time to prepare can make a difference.

âś… Talk with your family about your emergency plan.
âś… Know how to respond during an earthquake.
âś… Sign up for local emergency alerts.
âś… Make sure you have emergency supplies ready.

Whether you're at home, at work, or at school, tomorrow is a great opportunity to practice and prepare.

Tomorrow, October 15th, is the Great Shakeout, the World's Largest Earthquake Drill. We encourage everyone to practice "Drop, Cover, and Hold On!" If you are in a tsunami area, you should practice moving to high ground.

You will also hear the All Hazards Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens play the tsunami warning sound instead of the usual Westminster Chimes. This is part of the drill, and there is no need to be alarmed.

For tsunami safety tips, and to find out if you are in a tsunami hazard area, go to our Tsunami page at https://www.islandcountywa.gov/468/Tsunami . You can also play a sample of the tsunami warning siren sound to familiarize yourself with it.

A tsunami is a series of high-energy waves radiating outward from a disturbance. Earthquakes may produce displacements of the sea floor that can set the overlying column of water into motion, initiating a tsunami. A tsunami can also be generated by a large landslide or from an underwater volcanic er...

🚨 OK, Island County… let’s talk preparedness.

If the power went out right now and stayed out for 3 days…

👉 What’s the ONE thing you’d want to have at home?

Water? Generator? Food? Flashlights? A way to communicate? Something for your pets? Or maybe something you’ve learned the hard way?

👇 Tell us in the comments. We want to hear from you!

This isn’t just about collecting information or picking up a brochure. Come ask questions, meet the people who help our community during emergencies, see demonstrations, and find out what resources are available to you.

🎤 We’ll also have preparedness presentations throughout the day.

Preparedness starts with a conversation. What would you want to be ready for?
