Today, the Gammon House had the pleasure of welcoming dozens of architecture students from Miami University!

During their visit, students toured the historic grounds and worked on architectural renderings for the future Gammon Interpretive Center. Their creativity, fresh perspectives, and thoughtful engagement are helping us envision the next chapter of this nationally recognized historic landmark.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the students and faculty of Miami University for sharing their time and talents with us. Your contributions are helping shape a future where the history and legacy of the Gammon House can be preserved, celebrated, and shared for generations to come.

Out of respect and solidarity with our neighbors, the Gammon House has chosen to cancel our Open House Tour scheduled for Saturday, October 3rd, as the community lays Pierre Damas Bel to rest.

The Gammon House stands as a place of history, humanity, courage, and community. In keeping with what this historic home represents, we believe there are moments when being a good neighbor means making space for reflection, remembrance, and respect.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, loved ones, and community mourning this loss.

Several members of the Gammon House Board had the opportunity to attend the Underground Railroad Gathering at the Cleveland History Center this weekend. This gathering brought together historians, preservationists, educators, and advocates committed to preserving and sharing the stories of the Underground Railroad.

We’re grateful for opportunities to learn, connect, and bring new knowledge and inspiration back to our continued work of preserving the legacy of the Gammon House and the important role our region played in the journey toward freedom.

Today, we commemorate Emancipation Day, a time to honor freedom, remembrance, and the enduring pursuit of equality.

As we reflect on the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 the preemptive announcement came on this day in 1862 by President Lincoln. We honor those who courageously sought freedom and those, like George and Sarah Gammon, who helped light the way.

May we continue to preserve their stories and honor their legacy.

To learn more about Emancipation Day and this journey to freedom, visit the Gammon House for our monthly open house every 1st Saturday 1-3pm.
