Don't let bears come in the door - any door! Electrified "unwelcome" mats work and this video from a local Juneau resident shows how effective they can be against a local black bear who seems to think it can come inside without an invite. Contact your local ADF&G area office for more informtion on whether these would work on your property.

Ask yourself – “Is this an emergency?” Killing game animals in Defense of Life or Property (DLP) is only appropriate in emergency situations.
You may kill game animals in defense of your life or property if: 1) You did not provoke an attack or cause a problem by negligently leaving garbage, human food, animal food, or mineral supplements in a manner that attracts wildlife. AND 2) You have done everything else you can to protect your life and property.
Note: “Property” means your dwelling, means of travel, pets or livestock, fish drying racks/smoker, or other valuable property necessary for your livelihood or survival. Game animals taken in defense of life or property belong to the state and must be salvaged according to regulation. You must immediately notify ADF&G or Alaska Wildlife Troopers of the kill and surrender what you salvaged. Within 15 days, you must also complete and submit a questionnaire explaining the circumstances of the incident.
For specific questions, please call the Alaska Department Fish & Game Douglas office at 907-465- 4265 or the Juneau Alaska Wildlife Trooper office at
907-465-4000.

New archery regulation goes into effect today.

New archery regulation goes into effect today.

The Alaska Board of Game has approved a regulatory change, effective September 23, 2026, that allows the use of clarifiers and verifiers in archery-only hunts for big game.

What are clarifiers and verifiers?

• Clarifier: tiny magnifying lens that screws into the peep sight and is used in conjunction with a lens on a scope. This combination of magnifying lens in the peep sight and lens on the scope act like a r***e scope and allows archers to see their targets clearly.

• Verifier: tiny magnifying lens that screws into the peep sight. Functions like built-in reading glasses, designed to help archers see sight pins clearly.

Hunters participating in archery only seasons may now use these devices in accordance with all other applicable state regulations. As always, please review current hunting regulations at hunt.alaska.gov before heading into the field.

A moose in Juneau? Yes! And, yes we know about it! And no, it's not unheard of, though it is uncommon. In the fall, moose will cover more ground in search of mates and it's likely that is just what this bull moose was doing. Moose are very unpredictable and you should not approach them. Always give them space and it's ok to run should one come your way.

Pictured: Not the moose sighted in Juneau. This moose was photographed in Denali National Park.

Few cans are safe from a persistent bear who has learned how to access unsecured trash. With bears preparing to fatten up for winter, now is the time to double down on efforts to secure garbage, dumpsters, fish waste, chickens and anything else that might attract a bear. Securing trash not only keeps neighborhoods safe, but it is also the law. To report trash violations in your neighborhood, call the Juneau Police Department at 907-586-0600, and request a CSO response.* To report a bear that is repeatedly accessing trash or damaging property, call ADF&G at 907-465-4265. If there is a public safety threat, call 911.

Alone doesn't mean abandoned. 🐾

Wildlife will often leave their young hidden while they forage nearby. If you find a baby animal by itself, the best thing you can do is admire it from a distance and leave it where it is.

See a baby. Leave a baby. Let wildlife stay wild. Concerned? Contact your local ADF&G Division of Wildlife Conservation office.
