Green Bay West High School West High School prides itself on its rich history, diversity and variety of pathways for students. Norbert College, and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.

With origins dating back to 1877, Green Bay West High School has long been a symbol of pride and tradition for those lucky enough to be raised on the west side of the mighty Fox River. The architectural beauty of West High School provides the backdrop to a vibrant and diverse school community filled with the rigor of academia, the spirit of the arts, and the drive of athletics. Creating opportunities for our students to achieve our building and district missions of “Empowering ALL students to build successful lives today and for the future by working to ensure that all of our students are college, career, and community ready, inspired to succeed in our diverse community”, is key to creating and maintaining a community we are all proud to call home. Today West High School prides itself on not only our rich diversity of students, but also on the variety of career pathways we provide our students. West High School is home to a variety of innovative approaches to learning, including being just one of thirteen high schools in Wisconsin to offer an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Key to the IB Diploma Programme is its internationally minded curriculum that allows students to advance their learning through an inquiry-based approach, often pushing students to connect their knowledge to multiple disciplines. Developing students who are knowledgeable, risk-takers, communicators, balanced, thinkers, inquirers, principled, open-minded, reflective, and caring is done through this internationally minded approach rooted in intercultural understanding and respect for all people and their perspectives. In addition to this elite inquiry based approach to learning, West High School is also in the process of becoming an authorized IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). The IB MYP is a building wide programme that requires all members of our school community to have a commitment to the IB philosophy, fundamental concepts, instructional and assessment practices. Rigor and increased collaboration with colleagues are essential in creating mandatory horizontal (across grade level departments) and vertical (seamless programming at each level including: K-5 PYP, grades 6 -10 MYP and grades 11-12 DP) articulation of curriculum. All teachers plan for instruction using the Areas of Interaction to meet required aims and objectives while using formative and summative assessments. WHS also offers Advanced Placement (AP) and Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP) credit options. Many of these courses and programs, such our Certified Nursing Assistant, Neighbor Works Green Bay, and Bay Link Manufacturing programs allow students to apply their knowledge and earn college credit that transfers to many public and private post-secondary colleges and universities, including UW system schools, St. Green Bay West High School is proud of our strong traditions, rich history, and bright future. As we continue to prepare tomorrow's leaders, a critical aspect of achieving our mission of Empowering ALL students to build successful lives today and for the future is maintaining our completely open-access policy for students who want to push themselves. As stated in our vision, we expect every student to graduate from WHS having successfully participated in a college level course while at WHS and to receive a scholarship for their continued education. To this end, 60% of last year's graduating class participated in a college level course during their senior year. In addition, nearly 1 in 3 of our graduates left WHS wish a college scholarship, sharing nearly $700,000. Come walk our beautiful halls, check out our one-of-a-kind library, and see the school in action.

Prior to asking voters to consider an operational referendum, the Green Bay Area Public School District worked to find efficiencies in the budget. These include:
🔵 Consolidations of six schools and closing a virtual school
🍃 Reducing staffing by almost 10%, while enrollment has declined by 7%
🔵 Implemented 10% department reductions three years in a row
🍃 Postponed non-essential purchases
🔵 Restructured health benefits
🍃 Implemented the 2024 Referendum which focuses on operational savings through efficiencies in energy and staffing

The District’s focus has been on making cuts that avoid affecting students. Should the referendum be unsuccessful, the District will need to make cuts in areas that impact students including class sizes, programs, and student services.

On Monday, October 12, 2026, Chief Financial Officer Angela Roble presented the District’s 2026-27 budget. It is important to note that the 2026-27 budget is the last year of the voter-approved $16.5 million operational referendum. Through strong fiscal management, the District’s expenditures are increasing by 1% from the previous year, despite inflation increasing by 2.63%. The 2026 Operational Referendum, if passed, would not begin until the 2027-28 school year, and is for the purpose of allowing the District to maintain its efforts to improve academic outcomes, support increasing student needs, and address rising inflation.

Members can attend a public hearing regarding the 2026-27 budget on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the District office or watch it on YouTube: https://bit.ly/47GcW6q

The community came out to celebrate with a sendoff of our Green Bay West High School Wildcats on Friday, October 23, 2026, as the football team boarded the bus to Medford, WI.

For the first time in 30 years, the West Wildcats football team is in the playoffs. Family, friends, community members, and Fort Howard Elementary School students gathered outside to cheer on the team as the bus left West High School. The bus then drove by Lincoln Elementary School, Franklin Middle School, and Chappell Elementary School so students could cheer on the team.

Green Bay West Football takes on the Medford Raiders tonight at 7 p.m. Good Luck, Wildcats!

If enrollment declines, why don't costs decline at the same rate?

A common misconception is that fewer students automatically means a school district needs significantly less funding. In a district with 34 schools, small reductions in enrollment across multiple schools do not necessarily mean entire classrooms, bus routes, programs, or buildings can be eliminated. In many cases, students can only be combined into existing classrooms if class sizes remain within District guidelines and educational expectations. Small enrollment decreases often do not create enough reduction in a single grade level or school to eliminate a classroom section.

The District has already taken significant steps to improve efficiency. Through the 2024 referendum, schools were consolidated to better align facilities with enrollment trends, increase building utilization, and create staffing and operational efficiencies. These difficult decisions helped reduce costs and maximize resources.
Additionally, many educational costs do not decrease when enrollment drops. Student support services and state- and federally-mandated services must continue to be provided regardless of small changes in enrollment.

The challenge facing school districts today is not simply declining enrollment. It is maintaining educational opportunities, student supports, and mandated services while balancing reduced revenue and rising costs.
