As days get shorter, more of us drive in the dark, which can put people walking at higher risk. Remember to watch out for pedestrians and : be kind, courteous and safe.

TxDOT encourages Texans to follow these safety tips

For drivers:

- Stay alert. Scan for pedestrians everywhere, at all times.

- Stop and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

-Yield the right of way to pedestrians when turning.

- Pay attention. Put your phone away before you begin driving.

- Be cautious when passing stopped vehicles. They can block your view of pedestrians.

- Follow posted speed limits and drive to conditions.

- Be especially careful if you drive an SUV or pickup truck. They have large blind spots that can make it hard to see pedestrians.

For pedestrians:

- Cross the street only at intersections and crosswalks.

- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Don’t assume traffic will stop for you.

-Follow all traffic and crosswalk signals.

-Look left, right, then left again before crossing the street.

-When walking, put away your phone or earbuds that take your attention off the road.

-Stay visible. Wear reflective materials or use a flashlight when it’s dark.

TxDOT announces multiple weekend closures at US 59/I-69 and SH 288 for repairs

HOUSTON – TxDOT announces weekend closures at US 59/I-69 and SH 288, beginning on Friday, October 30 at 9 p.m., ending on Monday, November 2 at 5 a.m. Work crews will be performing bridge joint repairs in several areas as part of an ongoing $4.7 million project. This work includes multiple ramp closures on SH 288, which can be found on the Houston TranStar website.

Details of the mainlane closures and detours are as follows:

Friday, October 30 at 9 p.m. until Monday, November 2 at 5 a.m.

US 59/I-69 Southwest southbound from Elgin Street to Main Street: Two (2) inside/left lanes closed continuously – Take Exit 128B and continue straight to Southmore Blvd. Turn right and continue straight to main St. Turn right onto Main St. and continue straight to Richmond Ave. Continue straight until you reach the entrance ramp for IH-69, then turn right to merge onto IH-69.

US 59/I-69 Southwest southbound at Main Street: Two (2) alternating lanes closed daily – Southbound mainlane traffic may take Richmond Avenue to Milam Street, turn left and merge onto the US 59/I-69 entrance ramp.

Motorists should expect delays and consider alternate routes. TxDOT appreciates your patience and reminds motorists to drive with caution through work zones, and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment. Area residents should exercise caution if driving, walking, or biking near any construction activity.

A full list of closures for this project can be found at Houston TranStar or Drive Texas. Also follow TxDOT Houston on X, Facebook, Instagram and Threads for roadway updates and information. Closures are subject to change due to adverse weather.

Each year, the TxDOT Houston District conducts annual winter exercise dry runs—commonly integrated into their comprehensive winter preparedness drills—to ensure crews, equipment, and logistics are fully operational ahead of potentially freezing weather during the winter months. Today, staff from different Houston District sections participated in the dry run to be ready as we move into colder months. You just never know what Houston weather could look like at any given time and we always want to be prepared. 🥶❄️

We know not everybody is used to roundabouts, but they can have so many benefits. Here are a couple facts to wrap up
▶️ Large trucks can use them too
▶️ They can actually reduce traffic delays
▶️ Slower speeds mean they're safer for pedestrians and cyclists too

09/24/2026

A lot of clever design goes into building roundabouts. After one turned people's negative assumptions to a positive reception, local engineers are building a new roundabout outside of Hallettsville. Why? To prevent crashes at the intersection of two highways.
