This week, the California Fish and Game Commission voted to protect more of our ocean. They approved two brand new marine protected areas- at Point Sal and Mishopshno on the central coast, and voted to expand the MPA at Point Dume near Malibu to encompass the beautiful kelp forest there 🌊🐬🦭

It’s official: Point Sal is now a Marine Protected Area 🌊

Designated within the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary, this protection helps safeguard critical kelp, reefs, and wildlife—and marks historic co-stewardship with the Northern Chumash Tribal Council.

We showed up. We worked. We won.

The dunes are our ancestors’ breath and our children’s tomorrow,” said Violet Sage Walker, chairwoman of the Northern Chumash Tribal Council. “When we rise to protect the snowy plover and the least tern, we are saving ourselves — we are honoring the living spirit of these sacred lands and keeping the promise that every generation after us will still feel their healing power.”

Congratulations to San Luis Obispo’s very own Violet Sage Walker, named one of TIME’s 100 Climate Leaders of 2025! Her leadership to protect our ocean and champion the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary is inspiring.

I was proud to work with her to secure the sanctuary’s designation under the Biden Administration. 🎉

A true CA native: Red Abalone! 🤙

These lil’ sea creatures have been enjoyed for centuries along the CA coast and are highly valued by Central Coast Chumash. We source our Red Abalone from in Santa Barbara where they’re fed with harvested and cultivated seaweeds and raised in cool, clean ocean water from the Santa Barbara channel.
