Message from the CEO Regarding the Water Main Break and Service Outage
At 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, a third-party contractor accidentally struck one of the two primary water mains leaving our treatment plant. As a result, more than 600 homes experienced a loss of water service.
During off-hours, we have one employee on call carrying a single phone. While working to isolate the break and stop the water loss, that employee answered as many calls as possible. Unfortunately, the volume of calls and voicemail messages quickly exceeded the mailbox capacity.
Within approximately one hour of notification, our operations team had the damaged main isolated and restored water service to all but a handful of affected customers. In any emergency of this nature, our first priority is to stop the leak and stabilize the system. Once that has been accomplished, our team works to determine the full extent of the affected area and identify the customers impacted. Only then can targeted notifications be issued to those residents regarding service interruptions and any necessary boil order advisories.
For customers placed under a boil order, additional notifications will be provided once all required water quality samples have been analyzed and the order has been lifted.
Throughout this event, our employees continued fielding phone calls, coordinating operations, and beginning the repair process. After repairs were completed, additional work remained. Crews carefully repressurized the isolated main, flushed the system, and collected required water quality samples to ensure the safety and reliability of service.
I am incredibly proud of our employees and the professionalism they displayed throughout this incident. They handled a challenging situation with grace, patience, and professionalism while serving our customers during a stressful outage.
Our office staff worked diligently to identify and notify affected residents while helping manage a high volume of phone calls. Our operations crew worked tirelessly into the night, remaining on site until nearly midnight to complete repairs and restore service to every one of our customers.
We understand that losing water service is frustrating, and we appreciate the patience and understanding shown by the vast majority of our customers as our team worked to safely restore service.
Thank you,
Kory Culp
