Tonight at the Folk Meeting House in Springs!

Did you know the site of Meyersdale's Masonic Lodge, situated at 226 Beachley Street, was once home to the South Side School? Many of you might remember sitting inside its classrooms! Constructed in 1883, the school was torn down in 1967 to make way for the lodge's construction.

We thank local artist George Menser II - pictured here in front of the Masonic Temple - for his depiction of this old school building. Get a better look at his artwork inside the former G.C. Murphy Co. windows across the street from our Meyersdale Public Library. We'll soon be switching out George's sketch of the South Side School for a new piece of artwork. We have more artistic renditions of Meyersdale area school buildings to share with you in the coming months!

The new item this week in Children's Books is "Henry Upside Down".

These five kids must have had some pretty terrific dads! Back in 1979 "The Republic" newspaper here in Meyersdale ran a contest for youth ages 5-15, asking they explain - in their own handwriting - why their dad was the greatest using 50 words or less. This photo of the selected winners appeared in the paper on June 21st of that year. Pictured in the front row are David Jenkins and Gail Robertson; seated behind them are (from left) Kim Hotchkiss, Kim Klink and Melodie Gumbert.

Happy Father's Day weekend to all of those "greatest dads" out there, from both yesterday and today!

There are three new bestsellers, one new children's book, and five other new books.

The new bestsellers this week are "Choke Point," "Courage Can Save Us: Ten Extraordinary Americans and the Fight for Our Future," and "The Frenzy: Stories."

Young Maddox proved to be a natural during this week's Video Game Design Camp at our Meyersdale Public Library! Thank you, Maddox, for attending, and thank you to Chris and the other Somerset County Library staffers who helped him learn. Next up in our lineup of youth activities? ... Our annual Summer Quest Children's Program, which kicks off July 10th. This year's theme is "Unearth A Story." Come see what you can dig up in the way of summertime fun!
