It's Earth Day! The City celebrated by holding a Departmental fair in the Administration Building's lobby where Departments addressed their individual efforts in making the Magic City more resilient. The Department shared information on the Single Family Rehabilitation Program that it administers for income-eligible City homeowners who need to make vital repairs to their home (owner-occupied) to achieve decent, safe and sanitary conditions. Home improvements can include hurricane-impact windows and doors, and roof replacements -- helping strengthen the property against storms and disasters while allowing for the preservation of homeownership in our neighborhoods. HCD Public Hearings Miami, FL (June 15, 2020) - Public Hearings (PH) will be held to gather public input related to the City of Miami annual Action Plan Fiscal Year 2020 (October 1, 2020 – September 30, 2021), to be submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) on or prior to August 15, 2020. ...

🪏🪏We joined District Four in Flagami last week to mark the start of construction on the final two new, affordable single-family homes to be built as part of the District Four First-time Homebuyer Expanded Program. The two future homebuyers, identified via a computerized lottery, were in attendance to help break ground with a ceremonial dirt toss.

This Program was made possible with Miami Forever General Obligation Bond (GOB) funds which were allocated towards the construction of a total of six, single-family homes on vacant City-owned sites identified in District Four. Four homes have already been built and sold, with these last two set for completion at the end of the year. Here's a recap of the event:

We invite City residents and community stakeholders to attend in-person Public Hearings later this April to discuss community needs and establish priorities related to the implementation of US Dept. of Housing & Urban Development (US HUD) funding towards eligible projects and activities in the City of Miami, in Fiscal Year 2026-2027 (Oct. 1, 2026 – September 30, 2027).

The funding to be discussed at the hearings includes Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME), Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG), and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA). DISTRICT FIVE – LIBERTY CITY COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION TRUST "LCT"
An established neighborhood partner, the LCT was awarded $62,416 in CDBG funds to provide technical assistance to for-profit, eligible businesses participating in the District’s Commercial Façade and Code Compliance Program which provides assistance to small business owners in qualifying areas towards enhancing their property’s exteriors, strengthening the local economy and contributing to a neighborhood’s revitalization. An additional $500,000 in CDBG funding was allocated towards direct façade improvements including exterior paint, new windows and doors, security shutters and lighting. Some of the small businesses assisted include: the family-owned grocery store Brewton’s Market, Merlie’s Braids & More, and MLK (My Little Kitchen) Restaurant known for its soul food breakfast and lunch offerings. www.cddigitial.org/lct

DISTRICT FOUR - CITY OF MIAMI PARKS DEPARTMENT
Located at 2755 SW 37 Avenue, the ten-acre Douglas Park is one of the City’s most beloved green spaces. It is well known and well-loved for its array of activities for the community including bicycle paths, a baseball field, basketball and tennis courts, a kids’ playground and a dog park. A CDBG allocation of $420,395 allowed for major improvements to the Park’s walkway, for use by pedestrians for years to come. www.miami.gov/parks

📍DISTRICT THREE - CENTRO MATER CHILD CARE SERVICES
Embracing the concept that love for children brings hope for the future, Centro Mater’s mission for more than 50 years has been “to extend the educational mission of the Catholic Church while providing programs and services that assure optimal educational opportunities for all children regardless of race, creed or religious affiliation.” Its CDBG Allocation of $150,868 in FY 25-26 assists 75 children and families at the Little Havana location. The non-profit operates another four locations and serves over 1,500 children from 6 weeks old to 12 years of age. https://www.centromater.com/

📍 DISTRICT TWO - THELMA GIBSON HEALTH INITIATIVE, INC. - The City awarded $38,970 in CDBG funds to the Coconut-Grove based Thelma Gibson Health Initiative (TGHI), Inc., towards the provision of vocational, educational and counseling services to a total of 25 adults and seniors. Since its inception in 2000, TGHI staff - including counselors, case managers and vocational trainers - remain dedicated to improving the lives of residents in low-income neighborhoods while offering referrals to important healthcare services. The non-profit was co-founded by Thelma Gibson, a Coconut Grove native and trailblazing community leader who passed away in February 2026 at the age of 99. https://www.tghi-cg.org

It's National Community Development Week 2026 (April 6- April 10) - a time to shine the light on some of the great efforts made possible, year-round in Miami thanks to federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) funding. Both of these programs were designed to provide annual funding to local communities across the country towards the provision of decent, safe and affordable housing, a suitable living environment, and economic opportunities to low- and moderate-income people. This week, we'll highlight one activity or project a day, while recognizing the non-profit agency or local partner that makes it happen in the Magic City.

📍DISTRICT ONE - ALLAPATTAH COMMUNITY ACTION
A social hub for the seniors of Allapattah, this site along North River Drive has been in operation since 1974 and provides participating low-income elderly from the area with computer and ceramics classes, social activities, and healthy balanced meals. Known fondly as “el comedor” (the dining hall), the City awarded this non-profit $133,658 in FY25-26 towards the provision of just over 4,400 meals served at their site, Monday through Friday, and another 11,000 meals delivered to homebound participants during the year.
