Dawn Zuidgeest-Craft was just 7 years old when she got a microscope while she was sick at home. She loved looking at mealworms and leaves through the lens so much that her mother predicted she would become a doctor. That prediction took 65 years to come true.

She became a nurse practitioner, married twice, and raised four children. She had her last two at 42 and 49. And every time, she pushed medical school back. Then in 2020, her husband Carl survived a brain hemorrhage, and Dawn reviewed her bucket list. She still wanted to go to medical school. So she went into her retirement savings and enrolled at Saint James School of Medicine in Anguilla in the Caribbean. She failed a biochemistry exam but kept going.

Trinity Health Muskegon in Michigan accepted her into its residency program before she even graduated. Dawn graduated at 72 years old and became the oldest graduate in Saint James School of Medicine’s history. She turned 73 the same week her residency was set to begin. In an interview with the Washington Post, Dawn said, “I feel alive when I work in the medical field.” She hopes to practice medicine as long as she can.
