New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a $22 billion, five-year housing plan this week that sets the most ambitious affordable housing targets in the city's modern history. The plan would build 200,000 new affordable homes and preserve 200,000 more over the next decade. For homeowners, one of the most practical proposals is legalizing basement apartments citywide, giving owners a new path to create rental income from space they already have.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office indicted eighteen people for alleged deed theft and mortgage fraud this week.
The DA’s office alleged that the defendants stole the deed to a residential brownstone on West 131st Street in Manhattan through identity theft – artificially inflating the value of the property and cashing out via a mortgage.
“There’s an entire, we allege, ecosystem,” Bragg said at a press conference. “You have people who procure the identities, you have lawyers, you have real estate brokers.”
