The South African Consulate General in New York wishes all South Africans a Happy 30th Anniversary of our Freedom, which was attained through collective efforts of our people and forged through global . Today we honor our heroes and heroines who were so determined to realize a dream of a and South Africa that we enjoy today.

Freedom Day serves as a reminder of our country’s very first democratic elections held on 27 April 1994. The historic first free and fair election of 1994 resulted in Nelson Mandela becoming the first black president and he declared that “to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others”.

As we celebrate this important milestone of our democracy, we should also remember that “all those who cast their vote for a better South Africa in 1994 laid the foundation for a democracy that enhanced South Africa’s standing in the international community and opened up opportunities for engagement and cooperation”, said President Cyril Ramaphosa.
