Oklahoma Voters, Did you know you are legally entitled to time off to vote? π³οΈ
Under Oklahoma law (26 OS Β§ 7-101), registered voters can get up to two hours of paid leave to cast their ballot without any loss of pay or penalty. However, it isn't automatic there are a few strict rules you and your employer must follow:
ποΈ 1. You must give advance notice. You can't just walk out on Election Day. You must notify your supervisor at least three days before the election or early voting day.
β° 2. The "3-Hour Window" exception. If your work shift already gives you 3 consecutive hours off while polls are open (7 AMβ7 PM), your employer doesn't have to grant extra time. Employers can also alter your schedule that day to create this 3-hour gap.
π’ 3. The employer picks the time. If you qualify for the leave, your boss gets to choose exactly *which* hours you can be absent.
π 4. Proof may be required. The leave is paid, but you cannot be penalized *upon proof of voting*. Keep your "I Voted" sticker or polling receipt!
π 5. Distance extensions. If you have to travel far to your polling place and 2 hours isn't enough, the law mandates you be given "sufficient time" to make the trip and vote.
Plan ahead, talk to your supervisor early, and make your voice heard! πΊπΈ
