Hi all,

We aren't a fiscal entity like a PTO. We are a committed group of people with special needs kids volunteering our time to advocate.

Historically, we have included anyone who wants to join and are onboarding those who responded to our last outreach about helping to lead the group and connect with the district. We haven't had enough interest to consider running an election. Perhaps someday that would make sense.

We work hard to get voices from families via surveys and conversations. We share all concerns with the district. This group was born from a recognition that many families do not have the time or bandwidth to access advocacy to the district. We will share all of the concerns you have brought to us to the district as well.
We put out the call for feedback and priorities to OSD families back in August. Here is a new form to fill out:

As a group, we have decided to really focus on the aftermath should schools end up closing. Individuals in our leadership have spoken out against the closures on behalf of their own families. While we understand the issues being raised, we are focused on supporting our most vulnerable kids.

OSSEC's focus during the district's consolidation plan is the same as it has ever been, and however this shakes out, our kids' rights don't change. Every student with an IEP or 504 plan is entitled to the same services, support, and staff, no matter which building they are in.
We'll be watching for:
*No gaps in services during any transition
*Enough specialized staff at every site
*Families consulted early and given priority access to their new facilities
*Clear communication about what changes for your child and when

We're here for you through this process, whatever the outcome.

OSSEC is similar to a PTA/PTO for families, students, and staff, supporting Olympia School District students with disabilities from birth through post-high school transitional programs. We are looking for a few passionate and dedicated leaders to join our leadership team: a collaborative space where we advocate for resources, share experiences, and help shape the support systems that benefit all students. No prior leadership experience is required, just a heart for our kids and a willingness to show up. As a leader, you'll have a voice in district decisions, connect with other families who truly understand your journey, and help ensure that every child receives the care and opportunities they deserve.
