This Is Why Your Cities Have Become More Dangerous (And It Was Intentional) 05/23/2025

This short segment tells it better than we ever could. Listen to what US Assistant Attorney General Dhillon says about the corruption of consent decrees, especially when she starts talking about the DOJ's attempt to place the Phoenix Police Department under federal monitoring.

Thank you to Arizona Senate President Warren Peterson for calling on Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon to rescind the Department of Justice's findings report related to the Phoenix Police Department, which contained numerous inaccuracies with respect to facts and law. Florida deputy who volunteered for shift killed in gun battle at Dollar General 04/04/2025

In a tragic reminder of just how quickly a "routine" call can become deadly, this week a Florida deputy was shot and killed while contacting a subject at a store. In what only took seconds, the subject was able to pull out a gun and shoot the deputy before the deputy could respond - that is why we say that if you have never done this job, people may have a hard time understanding what a police officer is perceiving when they are dealing with a non-compliant subject.

Deputy Williams had a wife and 4 children. His parents were both retired from the same agency. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Sergeant Joseph Anthony Azcona 03/22/2025

Sometimes people wonder why the police in this country have such stringent standards for what we call "officer safety". The public may only see one side of this. For example, they may not understand why a police officer may immediately draw his firearm on someone who makes a furtive movement towards their waistband, or why the officers may immediately use a particular type of force against a non-compliant suspect.

The context for all these incidents is extremely important, and it is especially important to consider that in this country there are hundreds of police officers shot every year by non-compliant suspects. Police officers want to go home to their families, and their families want them to come home - uninjured. We believe the vast majority of the public feels the same way.

The two latest examples provide part of the context for why officers must have a healthy awareness of their surroundings - always. An officer in Baltimore County was getting gas for his patrol car at the precinct's gas station this week when a suicidal man walked up to him and shot him. Luckily the officer survived, but with serious injuries.

Unfortunately, earlier this month two more officers were shot multiple times while sitting in their patrol car in Newark by a 14 year-old boy. One of those officers was killed.

We all know this is a dangerous job. We also believe in holding ourselves accountable for obvious abuses of force. But the pattern we repeatedly see is that uses of force are judged from the perspective of a limited and often biased media story, leaving out all context of the danger of this profession. We ask for a more balanced reporting of these incidents.

Thank you.

It seems like common sense that increasing police staffing reduces crime and decreasing police staffing increases crime and that is exactly what the data for Phoenix police staffing and crime shows. Our current staffing crisis is likely to become a public safety crisis.

'Evil found them': Virginia Beach police chief alleges 2 officers were 'executed' during traffic stop 02/26/2025

This story is a tragic reminder of how "routine" police work can become deadly in a split second. On average, a police officer is shot and killed in this country every 7 days. Moreover, data shows that a police officer is shot and wounded almost every day somewhere in this country. This rarely makes national news.

We also want to share this so that people understand why a Department's use of force policy is so important to rank and file police officers. A good use of force policy will help keep police officers, and the public, safe. A good policy will also have the backing of those that go out into the streets every day to serve and protect.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of these two Virginia Beach police officers.

A picture is worth a thousand words. We are at staffing levels not seen since the 1990s, even though we are one of the highest paid Departments in Arizona. The residents of Phoenix deserve a fully-staffed Police Department.

Why are people leaving the Phoenix Police Department? Our recent survey provides some of the answers.

It is our duty as law enforcement professionals to continue to ring the warning bell on this, and we want the Phoenix Police Department to get better. We appreciate those of you who recognize why we are doing this. Thank you.
