🌱 What a beautiful morning for our Native Seed Harvest event at Hickory Glen Park!
A big 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙠 𝙔𝙤𝙪 to everyone who joined us and to our Pleasant Hill Parks and Recreation Commissioners for helping organize and facilitate this educational event!
🐝 Native seed collection is a small effort that makes a big difference. Healthy native prairies provide essential habitat and food for pollinators, help reduce soil erosion, improve water absorption and infiltration, and support better stormwater management in our community. Every seed collected helps contribute to a healthier, more resilient landscape.
🌿We loved learning and working alongside our community and look forward to hosting another Native Seed Harvest next year!

Feeling different, especially as a kid, can be tough. But in the same way that different types of plants and flowers make a garden more beautiful and enjoyable, different types of people make our world more vibrant and wonderful.

The sun is finally out after all that rain, Pleasant Hill! Ride Safe 'n Smart!

Lots of us may be heading out on trails, sidewalks, and streets on bikes, e-bikes, and scooters to enjoy it. A few simple habits help everyone get where they're going safely:

• Wear a helmet, every ride
• Watch for puddles, wet leaves, and debris left behind by the rain, and give yourself extra room to stop
• Use lights and reflectors when it's dusk or dark
• Slow down around walkers, kids, and pets, and give a friendly heads-up when passing
• Ride predictably: stay to the right, signal your turns, and watch for driveways and crosswalks
• Know your device. Some e-bikes and e-motos go much faster than a regular bike, so ride at a speed that fits the space and your skill
• Drivers: watch for riders and give them plenty of room

Sharing the road and trail takes all of us. Enjoy the sunshine, ride smart, and get home safe.

There are many reasons to feel different. Maybe it's how you look, the way you talk, where you're from, what you eat or something else that makes you feel like you don't quite fit in. The Day You Begin is a heartfelt story about finding the courage to reach out, share your story and discover that even when we feel different, we may have more in common with others than we realize.

🦇 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄? Bat Houses Help Support Healthier Parks!
You may have noticed bat houses in some of our parks, and more are on the way!
Bat houses provide safe roosting habitat for native bats, an important part of Iowa's ecosystem. These incredible nighttime flyers offer a variety of natural benefits to our parks and community.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁?
🦟 Natural Insect Control
A single bat can consume hundreds to thousands of flying insects in a night, including mosquitoes, moths, beetles, and other nuisance bugs. Bats are one of nature's most effective nighttime insect hunters.
🌸 Healthier Gardens & Landscapes
By helping reduce populations of insects that feed on plants, bats support healthier flowers, trees, gardens, and natural areas. Their presence is an important part of maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
🌎 Support Local Wildlife
Iowa is home to several native bat species that need safe places to rest and raise their young. Bat houses help provide habitat where natural roosting sites such as dead trees may be limited.
Next time you're at one of our parks around sunset, keep an eye on the sky and you might spot one of these amazing creatures at work!
